Search the yellow pages or another phonebook for mulch or landscaping. Call the companies and ask what types of wood they offer. Many types of hardwood can be used. Sawdust is a bit more difficult to find IME.

sawdust is a cinch to find.

segregated, fresh sawdust, OTOH, is very hard to find around here.

by segregated i mean dust comprised of only one type of wood and no laminates mixed in. by fresh, i mean unspoiled/composted from being wet outdoors.

Scourge: the dowels are dirt cheap at carpentry stores and you can prepare them yourself with a PC.

Hardwood sawdust is available (at least in the colder months) in the form of stove fuel pellets, which can generally be had for $5-$10 for 40#. Find out what brand your local dealer carries and call or email the manufacturer and ask them if they use only hardwoods and no fillers/glues.

Because of the high pressure and temp of manufacture, these pellets tend to be clean, but the specific species of tree is usually impossible to determine.

A more expensive alternative is to use smoker pellets or sawdust, which can be had from a number of online sources, such as:

http://www.stayton.net/traeger/Search.bok?category=BBQ-Pellets

http://northwoodssmoke.com/products.htm

In the case of these, you can buy pure pellets or sawdust of a specific tree species, including those you want.

Chips can be had from:

http://www.justsmokedsalmon.com/Alder.htm (Alder)

http://northwoodssmoke.com/products.htm (numerous)

Good luck!
