sterlize vs. pasturize straw
    #2810837 - 06/20/04 09:41 AM (19 years, 8 months ago)

I was just wondering how big of a deal it really was to pasturize straw... I know pasturizing keeps the good bacteria, but what exactly do the good bacteria do? Do they help the myc grow faster or do they fight off the bad contams?

has anyone had luck sterilizing straw?

I've got a bunch of straw so I think I may just throw some in the PC at 5 psi or so for an hour and see what happens.

the good bacteria your talking about are micro enzymes that fight off contamination for a realtivly short period of time giving the mycelium the time it needs to colonize the straw.once the mycelium has taken over the straw it will fend for itself.if your going pasteurize you can work in open air while spawning for a minute with little worry.if your going to sterilize it,that kills everything and make the substrate very susceptible to contamination when spawning in open air.you will have to be very careful not to expose it to the air if your going to sterilize.
