I hate the taste of vermiculite on the bottom of mushies. I try to not use it whenever I can. I like cocofiber. But yes, vermiculite works well too.

Getting the correct moisture content is the advantage to using vermiculite only. Peat based casings are a little more difficult to work with. Peat is difficult to wet. Too dry, To wet, To dry, To wet.

In my experance verm casings have been the only casings that have worked for me. Cakes haven't fruited, other casings contaminate. I got about 3 grams per 1/2 pint cake on my first flush more to come but the casings shrunk a lot. Guyute you don't need to use too much water just enough to keep it moist with no excess. Just squeeze a little and if no water runs out then it's ok. I used about a half inch on the bottom and covered the top lightly about 1/4 inch. Verm dosen't need to be steralized.

do you need to sterilize the verm, or just use it as is?

The verm should be ok as is because there is no nutrients in it. However just to be on the safe side, I always throw mine in the oven @ 400 for a while. It cools pretty fast and just puts my mind at ease.

Guyute,
1. 40cc per half cup of Scott's verm
2.Bottom layer was 1 inch-top was 1/4 to 1/2 inch
3.Yield-1st flush of about 50 shrooms, average of 3 inches-I don't have a large scale,only a 4 grammer. Haven't weighed all yet.
4. No, didn't sterilize the verm. I use Scott's. It's pretty sterile as is. As long as one is not sloppy :)

I'm real happy about the results. The second flush is about
70 percent of the 1st so far and all is well. Not a contam in sight-shhhh!

I used Ryche's Mexi-cub. It took long to colonize. Maybe my substrate was too wet. All in all-Hat's off to Ryche! I've an EQ Hawke syringe lined up next.
I'm as content with Ryche as with PF. Both are great, no matter what some here may say.

Good luck to all!

Bullfrog
