Anybody just starting to get into Buddhism, and find it pretty interesting? Ive always had a hard time grasping religion, but found out about Buddhism, and to be honest, it doesnt seem like a religion at all.
Its more like A philosophy.

yeah, buddhism is about a path that lets you discover the way things are. like discovering Dharma which is a cross between truth and nature or just reality, but in the olden days it could have meant science.
aspects of the path are kinda noble (as in 8-fold) but also humbly referred to as the middle way (does that relate to your middle earth affinity?)
lots of things in buddhism relate to mind and what is found in psychedellics, but no buddhist schools accept drugs openly. much eastern imagery is fractal, or multiple dimensional.

Buddhism has grown over the last 2500 years into a huge variety of beliefs and practices and yet the core teachings seem to have remained remarkably intact. The Four Noble Truths are in my opinion the most concise explanation of suffering and freedom from suffering ever recorded.
In general, there is deffinitely more emphasis on practice and less emphasis on belief.
When I'm done raising my family I'm hoping to live and practice in a Zen monestary for the rest of my life.

The Dhali Llama said buddhisim isn't a religion, it's science of the mind
But yea, like any social structure that we call a religion it has it's good points and bad.

cliche of the year award.
Buddhism is very very very much a religion. Go to Asia and find some REAL Buddhists (not these fake ass white motherfuckers you got here in North America) and you will soon find out that it is....(sigh) another of god's many religions.

thats a really silly statement.

right, when the Buddhist elite stop picking leaders through magical hocus pocus, then they say stuff like that.

It's not a religion (in comparison to something like judeo-christianity), but it has adopted customs and traditions by its follower. That is due to the organization of the concepts over the centuries... HOWEVER, in ancient and modern buddhist text it overtly warns against truly believing any of the bullshit.

A smart man will find buddhism and become a buddhist.
A wise man will find buddhism and take from it things that mean something to him, but not fully dedicate ones self to buddhism.
At first i called my self a "buddhist". But i have had experiences that point my spirituality in different directions. While buddhism is great, i believe in something else. My own "relationship" with "god" as you may call it.

yeah, i was just trying to make a point that while buddhism is great, i think, in my opinion it is wiser to take from buddhism the good things it gives you, but to live life in the way you feal is the best for you.

I agree with you psikooz. I LOVE the fundamental beliefs that Buddhism teaches, but I could never say "I am a Buddhist," but it's because I could never tie myself down to one religion. It's ignorant to presume that you know the answers that everybody searches for in life. I like the Unitarian Universalist Church because of this - they are very open to many different possibilities.

Buddhism has lots of GREAT things in it and contains everything you need to achieve inner peace and a working understanding of reality and yourself. It contains practical as well as transcendental aspects, and is much less bogged down with pointless dogma and prejudice than some other religions.
That said, its not the be all end all of personal growth, but its certainly a good start and you could spent your whole life studying it and never expend its potential.
So yeah, good luck on the path, make sure you balance theory with practice (spend as much time meditating as you do reading) and you have good things in store
PEACE

Honestly this is the most hatefull, poorly supported bunch of oppinionated trash ive seen on this forum in a long time
