Re: Micron Magic Disc [Re: NuShroomPharmerII]

I'm not so familiar with them as to be able to say what they're made of, but they're basically water-resistant microporous dics with a texture similar to an odd plastic. Their function is to allow gas exchange and retention of humidity without allowing any contaminant spores to enter the in vitro environment.

I'm not saying you're lying. Mainly because you sound genuine to me, but there's nothing in any disc that's going to make your jars grow any faster. If you're doing PF style jars, a disc is unnecessary and the part is played by the vermiculite layer. BUT, if you were to replace the vermiculite layer with a filter disc and all but remove the dome from band & dome lids, yes, it'll provide better air exchange and faster colonization. But a co2 build up is beneficial to mushroom mycelium when it's in the vegetative state, so it's a double-edged sword. This is the main reason only 1/2 inch holes are used for filter discs as opposed to the entire dome portion of the jar lid.

I hope that makes some sense. Your friends rapid growth, in my opinion, cannot be accurately attributed to the disc. And even if the disc is the source of magic colonization, it may not be in all circumstances (i.e. grains).

If I knew how to upload pics to this site and all I could take a picture of a FP filter disk so you could compare. If anyone cares to see a pic, tell me how to do it.

Fungi Perfecti's are reusable. I'm sure his are too.

These filters fit neatly within the rim of spawn jars underneath the lid, allowing air exchange but preventing the passage of contaminants. Sterilizable and reusable for life (not for food canning) 99.97% efficient filtration down to .3 microns.
