Communication with animals
    #2792370 - 06/14/04 12:19 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

A few nights ago I was biking home, I stopped by this field where alot of birds hung around. I spotted one and proceeded to communicate with it. What I did was wait till I heard it chirp and tried to copy a similair sound with my whistling... the result was after every whistle I made, it chirped back! Some times I took a break... the bird would chirp a few times, realize it wasnt getting answers and stop, but when I started whistling again, it started responding to me again.
It was just a sense of contact that was so cool. I got tired off it after a while and stopped, and the bird stopped chirping as well and I got on my bike and rode off. Then I met a cat, who was sitting on this dirt hill and looking around... I went cautiously close to it (trying not to scare it away) and just spend some time next to it looking at a very cool sunrise and a beautiful scenary. I felt a sense of contact with the cat to... nothing more than normal sense of company, but it was there... and pretty cool to... but the bird responding me earlier, that was just awesome.

Thought I would share that.

animals are awesome!  i think that everyone has some kind of connection with animals...  even if there allergic or they "dont like them"  ive seen people still gaze in wonder at them!

communication with animals is something i love... and im glad to hear youre not talking about telepathic communication or something to that effect, going down and communicating with them on there level as much as you can is an enlightening experience at times, you can learn a lot from trying to primally communicate with animals, that you cant learn from trying to communicate with people.

its also interesting to note how you said something like "we chirped back and forth for awhile and then i got bored".  that truly brings to mind an image of man as an animal, intereacting with other forms, with no gain at either end, just a passing environmental occurance!.

man when get on a tangent i just go on and on, sorry

peace!

Hehe, I've done that a few times before, it is really fun. I'm reminded of times when I've heard owls screaming at each other in the woods. They sound like fucking pissed off monkeys, it is hilarious. If you didn't know they were owls, you would honestly think that someone had released howling monkeys in the woods.  :smirk: Some naturalist guy showed us how to call them, and how to do the pissed off owl call as well. You have to be careful, though, because if you piss them off too much, they will attack you.

For the owls, I believe they were the great horned owls, the friendly call sounds sorta like "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?!"

Peace. :mushroom2:

Many birds (such as mocking birds) will mimic sounds. How is that "communicating"? What was the underlying message being transmitted/received?

Contrary to popular opinion; almost all known bird communication can be identified as revolving around one of four things:

Caw! Caw! (Warning) Danger! Predator nearby.

Warble! Warble! (Territorial) This is my cornfield - stay the fuck away.

Chirp! Chirp! (Food) Hey, look guys, fresh berries here.

Tweet! Tweet! (Sexual) Check me out baby. Look at the sheen on my feathers I am a healthy male in my prime...

Birds DO NOT sing as an emotional expression of joy as humans would like to believe.

If what you say is correct then I probably gave the bird a signal of a mix between, "look, fresh berries" and "look at me, I'm sexy", lol.

yeah! Thats what it felt like and it was so cool that way. Kind of like just saying "hey whats up" back and forth all the time... just to say something and have a pointless comunication, but cool none the less.

Am I the only one who can do research and use the search engine?

You should know by now that a negative cannot be proven. However, the major calls have been identified as stated. There is no evidence for "happiness & joy" in bird calls other than popular poetry and myth.

Apparently, someone did some sort of communication with the birds, to come to this conclusion.

How is observation (one-way) a form a communication (two-way)?

Guess you have never seen hunters mimic turkey, duck and geese calls.

i enjoy birds, until they look at me funny and i hate them. i hate them so much!

drop it swami, it doesnt really matter in the long run...

also:  are birds consider warm blooded?  i dont think ive ever heard any information on that...  reptiles are said to be closely related to fowl, are they cold blooded like the reptiles, or do they have an internal heating element like some fish tanks?

if you warble out some english to an argentine who by some chance has had no understanding of english, and he thinks he knows what youre saying, so he goes and gets you some water, though you asked for the soviet embassy... that is miscommunication.  though isnt miscommunication a form of communication still?  man im rambling again!  someone enlighten me or darken me.

peace
