Rumsfeld bans camera phones in Iraq: report
Sun May 23, 7:17 AM ET LONDON (AFP) - Cellphones fitted with digital cameras have been banned in US army installations in Iraq (news - web sites) on orders from Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, a business newspaper reported. Quoting a Pentagon (news - web sites) source, The Business newspaper said the US Defense Department believes that some of the damning photos of US soldiers abusing Iraqis at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad were taken with camera phones.
"Digital cameras, camcorders and cellphones with cameras have been prohibited in military compounds in Iraq," it said, adding that a "total ban throughout the US military" is in the works.
Disturbing new photos of Iraqi prisoner abuse, which the US government had reportedly tried to keep hidden, were published Friday in the Washington Post newspaper.
The photos emerged along with details of testimony from inmates at Abu Ghraib who said they were sexually molested by female soldiers, beaten, sodomized and forced to eat food from toilets.

Even abused prisoners deserve some privacy!

People should be getting pissed. There's something very fishy about banning all camera phones after damning abuse photos surface and show the administration and America in general in a bad light.

There really are good reasons why they shouldn't be allowed. It's just funny that they didn't seem to care untill the abuses were exposed.

If there were really good reasons(other than covering up their torture tactics) they would have banned camera phones before this.
They're going to keep doing what they've been doing. They don't want people to know it.

So you're saying the Bush administration always does things that there are good reasons for doing?

phones dont kill people, The US Government kills people, the US allowed japanese tourists and spies with cameras into military bases all over the country prior to WWII... did they not learn the lesson...
The Furby was banned from government installations because it was a toy capable of making a recording and repeating what it heard... did they still not learn their lesson
the only reason to ban the phones now is to allow the war crimes to continue without the ability to photograph them... the phones should never have been on the bases to start with if 'security' was an issue...
