I don't believe regular soil has the nutrients you need.  Maybe you could try the BRF tek if you can get your hands on some vermiculite.  Do you have ebay or amazon where you live?  Coco coir can be obtained from there.

when you're at the store ask for seed starter and then look at the ingredients, that's often what coir is used for at those places and they just might not be familiar with what it's actually made of. People also use pasteurized seed starter (jiffy mix or a home made mix of peat moss and vermiculite) as a casing, it might work as a substrate in of itself but I'd suggest doing some more research. I'm sure someone's tried it at one point or another.

You can grow cubes off of compost.
I have grown cubes off of Dr. earth potting soil (black bag)
Cubes can grow on many things that are not ideal.
Not sure what your definition of regular soil is but cubes wont grow in clay and dirt is whats under your fingernails.

Check pet stores in the reptile section, they sell bricks of coir for terrarium bedding (at least all the chain stores near me). I was having a tough time finding bricks until I recently stumbled on them while buying cat food :ooo:

Coir is used because it retains moisture really well and is pretty contam resistant due to the lack of nutrients. You could substitute it with anything that has the same qualities. A while back, I saw someone using shredded paper as a coir substitute.

I have used pollen pods off of Oak trees.

I have also used leaf mulch, (wasn't ideal). You will need a mulcher.

I have also grown them in Sandy loam.. (Accidentally)  Lots of rain that year.

I have also used the Seed Starter Pods, (Coir)

Also long as you have healthy spawn which is where your nutrients come from, you can grow cubes on almost anything. But you will be better off with Coir.

Subsitutes for Coir:

1. Jiffy Mix Seed Starter
2. Vermiculite
3. Compost mix (Has to be pasturized)
4. H-Poo and Vermiculite
5. Pom Pom's
