I was told by a mazatec Indian that the natives crush about 50 leaves in a bowl with water and drink this. This was the only time I have heard of it being imbibed. I would say start with an ounce and simmer in very cool water.. I always thought that it was inactive orally but I would like to here some other opinions.

Oh ok..I wasn't sure if it was active or not.. Just a question I had. Smoking the leave just doesn't do it for me.. The extract of course does, but i have a bunch of leaves but not enough to do an extraction of my own so I was looking for other options. Thanks.

One time I boiled some up (not sure of the amount) I sat in the bathtub for an hour holding it in my mouth and swallowing it very slowly. I made about 1 cup or so of this "tea". I got noticable effects, but in the future I think I would use a tincture if I was doing it orally.

Oral is a bit wasteful you use 10x as much and only get 1/2 the effect but it does last over a 1/2 hour vs 6 minutes. tea consumes even more but I like it.
anyway I use 2.5 or more grams of plain leaf in a big cup of boiled water and I stirr it like crazy for about 5 minutes to break off the trichomes that have salvinorin in them and to get a bit of an emulsion going.(CRUDE extract is not good for this since the waxes don't let much good stuff into the water - I bet standardized is good for tea but gaawd how costly and w asteful!)
it is a nasty bitter but refreshing brew.
then the eyecandy comes (~10-~15 minutes after starting to drink), especially if the lights are low.
you get a strong salvia afterglow for 2 days from tea. I like it when I have a cold (I had fewer colds this last year since I started salvia) or when I can't get a sitter.

It may be wastefull but its different and its the traditional way. Well sublingual is the traditional way. I would say its a different experience and you could possibly navagate the realm. I haven't heard of natives making salvia extracts and smoking them and such.
I was told by this Mazatec from oaxaca that if someone stole your cow or sheep or whatever, you could goto the shaman and he would imbibe this tea , go into a trance, and tell you exactly who stole it. I love curianderism(sp) and folk healing because to the western culture it is complete BS but it actually works for them.
Thanks for sharing your experience RedGreen.. Very interesting.

Just curious, roughly how many times more salvia would be needed for a tea to get the same effects as chewing on the leaves?

It would take a lot, It's a nice tea though, i usually dry a few leaves to a crisp , grind them up and then put them in a coffie filter with a string around the top. But quid is by far more effecive.

3-4 times as much as oral is required for tea really since it is not chewed and not fully liberated from the leaf. (i.e. after tea you can extract the redried leaf to get ~60% regular salvinorin)
the traditional way was to make emulsion by beating the leaf to a fluid mass and adding water to drink. the beating liberated the salvinorin and ground it down in size, it is a hard chemical to absorb and it does not dissolve readily either (except in acetone or DMSO) SAGE WISDOM Emerald Essence seems to get quite a lot packed into their elixir.
I have often "found missing things or unknown relationships" better after a session.

The Xs on extractions stand for how many grams of raw salvia leaf were used to make it.... find out how many grams you have, and take a gram out of it (thats what you'll be putting the extracts back onto.) now take all the rest of your 1/2 ounce, throw it in a jar for atleast three days with isopropyl alcohol.... press the alcohol out, and evaporate it onto your gram of dry leaf... you can soak the 1/2 oz of leaves one more time if you really want all the goodies....

so when I evaporate it, i poor the alcohol solution on top of the gram of leave right?
BTW thanks for your help. Cause the leaves are just sitting here so i might as well utilize them.

rule of thumb for extractions in salvia is to go roughly 15% to 30% over the top level of leaf matter...
