Would you eat this mushroom?
    #2712811 - 05/21/04 08:10 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I noticed quite a few of my mushrooms (Ps. Subaeruginosa) have had visitors (worms) and some just look generally yucky on the inside whilst looking ok on the outside. And some have this white fluff inside the stems, is this mold or something? Would it cause nausea or some bad reaction if eaten? And how far would you let the worms eat the shroom before discarding it?

Here's the white stuff inside the stem (and some wormholes grrr):

And here is a reasonably good looking shroom on the outside:

But on the inside...yuck!

Are these fine to eat?

Cheers for any suggestions.

I don't this that I would eat them. Especially if it is contaminated with mold. My vote: no eat.

Meh, those mushrooms are fine. The white stuff inside is normal mushroom stuff (not mold) and the worms just add a little protein

At least cut off the caps, dry them out thoroughly, and use those, if you're mainly worried about the stalks... they look pretty big so you should still have plenty/ won't have to worry about it that way... a mere suggestion...

PS. no worm is known that feeds on shrooms AND can live inside the human body, so no worries there... as the above post suggests, this is just added protein (dry the shrooms out though, you'll feel better that way! :-)
PSS. I'd make a few prints too, out of interest... NICE SHROOMS!

Here in Texas, worms usually get to the shrooms before humans do. That's why I recommend making a tea from wild harvested mushies. Then you know that any bacteria have been killed by boiling, and you will strain out any worm bodies.
Many people say that boiling destroys the active compounds. In my extensive experience, this has not been my observation. I have posted my method for making mushroom tea here in the past. PM if interested in the "recipe".

It does. It breaks them down/lessens them. It's been scientifically proven.

If you'd just eat the mushroom's stright up you'd find your trip would be much more intense.

In my friend's experience, if you would not boil the mushrooms in water but boil water then put in a cup and add shrooms, cover for 15 minutes with a plate or something, then strain, drink and while drinking do this soking again with fresh boiled water and drink the second cup.
He says that while you end the first one and wait for the second the magic takes effect allready and its hard to finish the 2nd cup. and he says it is very intense this way, coming on very quickly but shorter lived...

It does seem to come on quicker that way, which is no surprise I guess as it's much quicker to absorb liquids through the intestine than actually digest solds. Probably that's why wet/ fresh shrooms kick in quicker than dry, again they're more quickly broken down. absorbed by the gut. A possible exception might be finely powdered shrooms, which are also probably quickly absorbed by the gut. Generally if they kick in quicker, they'll ultimately be processed quicker, accounting for the 'shorter duration', which can definately be desirable (personally I get a bit tired of tripping at about say the 3 hour mark)
Heating the psilocin/ psilocybin does break it down/ degrade it somewhat, that is common knowledge. That doesn't mean it's necessarilly a bad thing to do though, especially if you do it as 'trade om' describes above, ie. don't actually boil the shrooms, rather put them in water that is just cooler than boiling and not for too long. Depends how you like your trips to come on, and whether you have plenty of shrooms or not I guess!

yeah i don't bother about the mushrooms with a few wormholes. but the ones which looks like swiss cheese and have dark mushy parts i tend to avoid.

I wrote a little breakdown on my theory on the mushroom tea thing, you know, if it's weaker or not:

back in the day we'd find pounds of cubes and boil the shit out of them in a vat and trip like no other. but i trust the scientists now so if i have a limited amount it's time to get out the knife and fork, so to speak.
