pasteurizing straw (without a thermometer)
    #2668205 - 05/12/04 11:03 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

hi,

i got a big sac of straw.. a big pot that it fits in.. and i've read some teks that say how to pateurize, but they all say "heat at so and so temp for so and so long.. " i can measure the time (thank god).. but i have no way of knowing the actual temperature reading.. can i just put the straw in water thats at a near boil??? like medium setting?? i am scared of this "bacterial bloom" that can happen if you overheat, but obviously i dont want to overcompensate and not cook it up enough. so any tips? bring it to a boil? just below a boil? help!

thanks

Nope, actually its no where near boiling,it should be kept between 160F and 170F for around 1- 1.5 hours. If it gets over that for long you will kill off the helpfull bacteria.Buy a cheap meat thermometer at wallmart for $3.If you kill off the benificail bacteria, you might as well just PC it,it defeats the whole purpose.

Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.
