rent Reznor Rewrites NIN Rulebook For 'Brutal' New Disc
05.07.2004 9:33 PM EDT
Those who like industrial rock but hated The Fragile ? Nine Inch Nails' epic, progressive and tortured 1999 double album ? might want to give Trent Reznor another shot when Bleed Through comes out later this year.
This disc, too, is likely to be filled with bitterness and loathing, but that's where the comparisons end.
Reznor has called the record more "minimal" and "brutal," and in an online Q&A session with members of a Nine Inch Nails mailing list, he elaborated a bit more.
"I'm approaching this record from a totally different mindset and strategy than The Fragile," he said. "Every record I've done has reflected where I've been at as a person when it was done, for better or worse. What is coming out of my head now seems to [come] from a very different place than the last record."
To sonically capture his new mind frame, Reznor is working in Los Angeles with veteran producer Rick Rubin and he's taking an unorthodox approach to songwriting to ensure the album sounds different from his prior offerings.
"One of the rules of this record has been to orchestrate using only monophonic voices. No chords. Anywhere," he wrote. "Most of the synthesis has been done with a rather elaborate and ever-growing modular rig and recorded live. ... Editing and correcting is avoided, if possible [and] whole takes are encouraged as opposed to looping." Reznor added that the rhythm tracks will consist of a combination of real drumming and vintage drum machines.
Bleed Through will be Nine Inch Nails' fourth full studio album since they emerged with the groundbreaking Pretty Hate Machine in 1989. The group also released the scathing EP Broken in 1992 and a number of remix projects.

How could anyone hate Fragile? It was a fucking masterpiece...
I can't wait to hear this, he's done so much with studio techniques that it will be interesting to hear his new approach.

Sounds very promising

Ladies and gents, Trent Reznor going through a midlife identity crisis. Hope he's ready for another commercial disappointment. He didn't seem to handle the last one too well. Still, I'm sure the album will be very good. And I can't wait to see them live. But how many more years can the man tear synths apart on stage before he starts to look like a fat sagging wreck.

it's about time, nin is one of my favorites
last semester i did a report in my morals and ethics class on Closer. I played the uncensored video for my class. My teacher's face turned wicked red... it was cool. I got an A on it and even though there was a group from the catholic school, they enjoyed my presentation. and i did it solo, which a lot of people found impressive... for some reason.
I just wanted to do something different because I knew the other two groups that presented were going to do something bland like interviewing people on what they thought about abortion or premarital sex. and that's what happened, so I rocked them all. I rocked them all wicked hard.

Damn straight man, if anything were to be hated in would be some weak remixes that have been released and rereleased over the years. Can't wait for the new album.
Anyone hear anything about Tapeworm??? I know some tracks have been laid down over the years, but anyone know if this sideproject will ever become more than a rumor?

Tapeworm isn't coming out. There is a message by Mr Reznor on www.nin.com regarding the project. A few months ago it was announced that there would soon be a release date, but now the whole thing has been scrapped.

That sucks. I know they recorded some stuff. A good friend of mine worked in a studio in New Orleans for a bit and found some 24 track tape labeled tapeworm in their vualt. Maybe someday......

I wholeheartedly agree about The Fragile. The album was as groundbreaking as the others, just not the same flavour.

^ exactly. The Fragile was far more instrumental than what people were expecting. Nicely orchestrated, both electronically and not. It's a concept album of sorts (well..so was Downward Spiral), and it was made in the same spirit as a Pink Floyd album if you ask me.
An album that's meant to be listened to from begining to end, not merely for a song here, a single there.

Yep, it's got themes and motives running through the whole thing, and sometimes it's hard to pick out. The instrumentation alone is brilliant...

Terrible Lie (on PrettyHateMachine, track right after Head like a Hole), down in it, sin, also on ^ A nything from Broken, like Wish, Last, Happiness in Slavery, Gave Up
Downward Spiral: Piggy, Heresy, March of the Pigs, The Becoming, Reptile <--hell yeag I'm just naming songs now because NIN albums are good full ablums
From The Fragile: The Wretched, Were in This Together, the Fragile, Even Deeper, no you don't, again kinds just naming tracks. The whole album is good and it all flows together.
Kinda funny that of all of the NIN "halos" that have been released, only three are really albums.

There are very few bands left that with each album they break new ground and reinvent themselves. NIN and TOOL are among those bands. Bleed Through should live up to most of the hype because Trent Reznor is a genius of the synthesizer as much as Simon Posford of Shpongl is. And of course the new Tool album, whenever that comes out, is going to be something completely fresh and amazing.

Reznor is a genious of the studio. Most of Fragile is real instruments, tuned funky or filtered. That guy knows how to play EVERYTHING....
