Nice find fez, and fantastic pics... they look good and hydrated (muz be a v. wet place) !!! If you make a print from any and know anyone with a microscope, would be interested to hear how the spores look (colour/ shape etc)... to see if they're the same as the spores from the subs that I find in my wee patches in Melbs (see post 'Melbourne Victoria Australia ETC (w/pics)... spores can be telling re subspecies, and I'm getting very interested re all shrooms and their spores...

Based on my limited experience with Australian shrooms they don't really look like the subs I've found in the ACT and now Melbourne (no doubt they are PschyAct though) ... the ACT ones (caught various years on the trot in the right season, very reliable re location/ fairly un-fussy re conditions) had plenty of moisture but remained more 'dome-like' than in your pics, right up to spore-dropping stage, and even while still growing / undisturbed often had a tell-tale blackish ring where gills met cap that I cannae see there in your pics... (this got more pronounced just a few minutes after picking, and bruising on stalk etc was quick after picking also (~10 minutes max before you could see it).
The Melbourne one's I've found may be the same exact species as the ACT ones and just look different cause they're water starved... they seem to spring up the same, but seem to be able to mature earlier (cap fans out) even at a tiny size, once the moisture runs out... I have also made great prints from surprisingly tiny 'seemingly immature' P.aurigs that I have found in Melbourne... only if I dry them patiently on paper all the while though... I guess this ability to drop substantial spores even from what appears to be a pretty juvenile shroom would be advantageous 'survival-wise' in suburban Melbourne, and could be the result of a kind of 'accelarated evolution/ selective breeding', that has essentially been caused by peeps being keen on picking these guys even if they are 'too small'... zeallous picking (especially in fairly populated areas, compare suburban Melbourne w/ remote pine forests outside ACT) would logically select for sub-strains/ slight genetic variants that are able to sporolate earlier in their life-cycle than their predesessors... especially over 10 or more years...
This has got me really thinking... I might post a post on the 'micro evolution' that shroom hunters may be causing, depending where and when (what stage of maturity) they pick... chuckle...

hi suboriginal, you should slice some gills up and have a look for different cystidia btw different variants you find, as well as measuring the spore sizes, if youve got regular access to a microscope. it is very variable looking species. genetics makes me hurt this time of night.
hey nice buds iluan,

I was thinking the same thing, there is no bluing at all from the environment or anything and there almost always is a trace of blue before picking. But that environment looks like it's been pretty dry and I have noticed the cyanescens don't blue as much while growing under dry conditions. I wouldn't have guessed subs from these pics though.
but Ferret has been picking these for a while so...
I'd like to see pics from after picking these just to satisfy my curiousity.

Peace - @cro

The colors of the caps are not even right. maybe an Agrocybe species.

They even get wavy caps in agrocybe. I am pretty sure they are not P. subaeruginosa though.

I'm pretty sure they're subs/australiana! The right shape and structure is there, especially in the pic of the "2 subs"

check out these pics from Bluemeanie's site.

they just seem less common.

are you going to be taking spore prints?
tell us about the bruising too

"subs or cubes?"
absoulately not cubes though.
Cubes don't grow in such habitat.

they look kinda like dry subs to me... the last photo seems to have blue bruising where one of the mushrooms at the top has a hole eaten thru it

hah such interesting responses! those two pics with brilliant white stems is caused by flash over-exposure, but there was minimal bluing even after they were handled.
i dont find these too unusual looking for subs- well except for that last one. mj your sub page's main pic certainly is not typical of subs, very red caps that made me want to eat stropharia aurantiaca when i first started shrooming.

hey maybe they were eucalypta, cos they were growing directly under a gum tree? :smirk:

heres some stem

and some dry
i think you may be right about the wetter shrooms bluing more, when i pick in the rain they do seem to blacken almost halfway up the stem

peace

NOw that I saw the others but i still did not see bluing in the posted images at the top of the thread.

mj

I think the color was off on the photographs.
Still a good score.

Kuydos to the discovered of that patch.

They are definately subaeruginosa. I have no doubt about that. The caps are just heavily hydrophanously faded. And I know Ferret and he knws his shrooms...
The only way to differentiate Ps.subaeruginosa from eucalypta is by an examination of the gill fragments. That being said, all the subs ive collected since 1999 in Melbourne and area have been basically the same - same spore sizes and cystidia - just different macroscopic phenotypes of the same thing.
They are basically identical to guzman's description of australiana and Cleland's description of subaeruginosa - which ofcourse are the same mushroom.
Ive never found a mushroom that resembled eucalypta anywhere in victoria - only in the high country of NSW and possibly near sydney. But that doesnt mean that they arent down here - and as they are so similar, its quite likely...
Here are some pics of eucalypta:
