im planning on having my cakes in a rubbermaid of only 6 inches high or so to fit under my low bed.... after the cakes fully colonize do they have to be standing up to fruit? or is laying them on the side just as good?

I suppose you *could* lay them on their sides, but keep in mind that with any luck, you will be growing 'shrooms almost that tall, If you are using perlite humidification, it will take up another inch or so of depth. A small casing might fit in the space required though -- maybe 1 inch of substrate.

They can go anyway in my opinion because they are surrounded in mycelium, and i would recommend a bigger fruiting chamber.

ok, first of all, don't grow mushrooms in your parents' house. You're putting THEM at legal risk. Have a little bit of respect for them. Second, if it looks 'normal' for you to have piles of towels and clothes in your room, then maybe you should think about cleaning your room. (mushrooms don't grow well in filth) Third, you don't need any extra light to fruit shrooms. Just a little ambient light will do.
Moderators...I'm guessing this person is probably under the age of 18, and should be banned from the site.

as far as i am concerned this person is growing legal mushrooms for food or agricultural purposes..

myco, dont take his head off bro... your shrooms dont need a bulb on em man, unless you are doing some more strenuos technique, which you shouldnt be doing if you dont have more than 6 inches anyway... your gonna need more room; a bigger grow chamber... a ceiling too close to the shrooms PROBABLY won't be good as far as humidity and dripping goes... hey myco, is that your pic man?

You are going to be doing a heck of a lot of air exchanges on a terrarium that small as well. Maybe run some filtered air in and have an escape with a HEPA filter on it. Nothing should come in, though, if you have positive pressure. Filtered air is the key. Your legal mushrooms will grow to fit the container. They may look funny, but the end result will be the same. Some bruising (bluing) will occur at the points where the mushrooms touch the sides, as well. This is also a good place for molds to form if you aren't clean. .w
