Saving a partially colonized cake
    #2611003 - 04/28/04 10:39 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I've checked the board and FAQ, I was wondering if anybody has had any success with this? My one cake has began pinning and I assume colonization has stopped because I haven't seen any growth in about 5 days. I was going to cut the uncolonized region off sharply (1 cut), dunk it for 24 hours, cover the uncolonized parts with a thick layer of vermiculite, and fruit in my terrarium, sound reasonable?

people have done this before with success. When you dunk you might want to use some h202 in the water or check into bleach dunking to try and kill off any leftover contams.

no, the cake is partially uncolonized...quick question, all stores nearby said that vermiculite is off the market now for safety reasons...for double casing it for placement in my terrarium, can I use a soil conditioner (consistency of perlite sorta, hard)it says its good for water retention or is this too heavy? I'm still planning on sterilizing it but I don't think water will soak into it so I don't know how I'm going to do thisin the microwave...any suggestions>?
