If you're asking if the technology exists to track your internet usage, well of course. All your websurfing and the sites you visit are probably logged. It's up to your employers whether or not they want to do anything about it. As long as you're doing your job, then they probably won't fuck with you.

It also depends on how you are getting your Internet service. At my work when we want internet service, the computer hooks up to our T-1 router, the server doesn't even know that we are on the internet. Now, inorder to cover-up your tracks. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, simply go up to Tool/Internet Options, and just hit clear history. You do this to get all the websites that you visited off of Address drop down box at too also of course to clear the history. Second, get into windows explorer and goto C:\windows\cookies, this is where Internet Explorer stores all the cookies that let you know where you have been. ------------------ "HOW WOULD I KNOW?" Look in your contract. There should be a passage that your employer reserves the right to monitor your internet activities (if you are lucky there's none). Most big companies do that for monitoring productivity (what a crock). Some even snoop out your email (what about the 4th amendment ??) And yes, they have the technology to tell you exactly which site you've visited and for how long. I love my university. As long as you don't download kiddie-porn or cracked programs, they don't give a shit what you are doing

In my high school, they had a program where they could see the screen of any computer hooked up to the network if they so desired. Of course, I never saw the dude using it except for the time he showed it to us, but still...Clearing your history and cache every day can't hurt. But don't think this safeguards you from them knowing. ------------------ Listen to Captain Jack http://www.mp3.com/captainjack99/ http://www.captainjackmusic.com/

For extra security use some anonymu proxy like www.rewebber.com or www.anonsurf.de or www.keepitsecret.com or www.anonymizer.com or something like that. They still will see that you spend half of your workday surfin' the net, but the only adress showing is the one of the anonymous proxy

Namistai, i thiink you got that backwards. All of those proxy sites protect from websites knowing your IP. i could be wrong but i think that the company would still know what sites you went to. ------------------ "People who think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do."

I have worked at a few larger corporations in their IS/DPS (tek) departments. All of them have keep logs of where their employees go on the Internet using their proxy server logs. I tried to go to the Shoomery for my current employers proxy server and it wouldn?t even let me ?Access Denied: Drugs ? was the message I got. Good thing the ?keeper of the logs? is my buddy. LOL So just to be safe I would do any surfing you don?t want you employer to know about at home------------------ Common Sense is Free. Live it, Love it, Use it.

~JohnnyActually you are right for rewebber.com and anonsurf.de. But connect e.g. to keepitsecret and check out the location-bar of your browser. No matter which site you visit, it shows the keepitsecret-adress and that's what's gonna show up in the network logs

Rest assured that your IT department can see far and wide into your useage of the 'net. We run Raptor and Webtrends on the network I manage, and the logs/reports these tools generate are incriminating to say the least. Be safe - - do your personal surfing outside of work. Even company execs have been reprimanded for their visits, during and after business hours, to "taboo" sites. Other types of activity - - ftp and email, for instance - - are just as easy to monitor. We even nail people for using bandwidth-wasting streaming media, which are prohibited on our workstations. There's no privacy at work, that's for sure, and your employer has every right to monitor your usage of company owned resources.ITS PAT: Just a warning: your company PCs may use the firewall as a DNS pass-through. Ours does. This means every request for IP resolution from your PC is logged at the firewall. Very common practice. Laz

You will probably find that they will route you through a transparent cache, and log EVERYTHING, so that means proxies or not, you still will be going through a proxie (As a side note most medium to large ISPs do this as well, cuts down on bandwidth outside their network, that they get charged for). Trust me, I am a network admin Also if you use IPs, it will just not make it is obvious, but if they are really nosey, they can just type in the IP and find out anyway. Those proxy sites are ok to get around, but do look suss when all your traffic is going to those sites. Eitherway, just keep your history clean, and hope that your network admins are cool about this sort of stuff. Having been in the IT industry since I was about 16, 75% of techies use drugs anyway, so you should be right. YMMV of course.jC

Aphex - To make life easier for those required to summarize firewall logs, Raptor returns FQDNs on IP addresses. Raptor (Axent Technologies)is one mean mofo, and a pretty good product overall. Here's the funny part: for the associates who are to be "punished" at the request of department heads, we merely disable DNS at the workstation. Anyone savvy enough to know how to turn it back on could do so - - if they knew the IP of our DNS. Or they could just enter IPs instead of FQDNs. But they'd still get busted eventually. Laz
