substrate drying out?
    #2553592 - 04/13/04 07:36 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

someone i know prepared the jars up to the boiling stage, but then didnt have time to do anything for about a little under a week. The jars were kept in a cool dark place...would they be too dry to use? they were not boiled yet.

but in your post you said they were not boiled thus the infections are still there and if an un sterilized jar sat for a week it would be infected for sure.

yes i understand that, but this person is boiling them right now, so wouldnt that get rid of infections like it is originally supposed to do? My question was would the amount of h2o in the jars still be alright to use?

yes they have lost h2o if they have sat for a week. the point of sterilization is to get rid of infections before they germinate, if they sat for a week the infectious spores that were not removed have most likely germinated, used nutrients and moisture in the jar for them selves. and yes boiling now will kill any infections that may have germinated. but that dose not mean you should use those jars in my opinion.

make new jars to be sure the moisture content is correct.
