Stropharia rugoso-annulata *indoor cultivation!!!

Well I had intented to wait until the grow was finished but I am too excited and wanted to share. I have been working on this for several months now and was not actually expecting it to work but I still had to try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained right? Ok, so here are some pictures of my cultivation of Stropharia rugoso-annulata indoors on a large wood based MycoBag.
This one was taken after the casing was colonized.
I see the start of pins forming! Very cool
They are getting bigger, oh man I can not wait to see them in a few more days.
I hope you have enjoyed seeing this half as much as I

Are you sure you don't have a P. cubensis contamination problem?

Yes the casing layer must be biologically active. I used a buffered peat moss casing layer that was "aged" before use. Let me explain what I mean by aged. I prepared the peat moss first by buffering it with calcium carbonate and then added cold water to it in a 5 gallon pail, just enough water for it to be moist. I then set this bucket on the floor of the kitchen uncovered for a month, it was very dry by that time. I then re-wetted it and used it to case the colonized wood. In to the fruiting chamber it did go. Once a week I would take it out and drop it on the counter from about 4 inches high, almost slamming it down. My intent was to disturb the culture. I also told it some bad jokes. After 2 weeks I did a deep scratching of one side of the bag only, and then again a week after that but the last time was a shallow scratching. Then I started to see pins form. MycoBag edit: oops I hit the 3 which should have been a 2.

hehe I am positive that it is not a contaminated culture. I know this is not a common or easy mushroom to cultivate indoors, but I asure you it is the King stropharia.
Here is a close-up picture to show better detail. Click for larger image

woow, really great news. Can you tell us a bit more about the growing conditions ? I mean substrate preparation, temperatures etc.

The substrate is a larger version of the wood based mycobag. This is a mix of hardwood chips, sawdust, bran and vermiculite. I first made a liquid culture and then inoculated a corn based mycobag. once that grew through I spawned it to the wood based bag. It was incubated in the dark at around 70-73 degrees. Once it was colonized I let it rest in the incubator for an additional 3 weeks while the casing material was aged. Then I cut off the top part of the bag and cased it and put it in the fruiting chamber. Now I let it just sit there and did what I posted above. The temperatures were fluctuated between 60 and 80 degrees during this time. I also fluctuated the humidity. higher at night (cooler temps) and lower during the day (higher temps). I lowered the temperature by opening a window in that room a little and during the day I turned on a space heater. Well I think that is right and I did not leave too much out. If I did I will do an edit or another post or something.
questions? comments?

Well they continue to grow though be it very slowly. I have the same feeling as a newb having a first time flush. Here are a couple of pictures from early this morning.
And another close-up photo. click to enlarge.
Like, cool man. There hopefully will be more photos in the coming days... I want to eat a couple while they are still young and at the same time I want to make spore prints. Indeed they are to tiny for either at this point.

Wow! Are they in "grow room" conditions: sterile, sprays, heaters, HEPA, etc, or is this a porch window??

This is just a 'getto fruiting chamber" as shown in my Reishi thread. It is not sterile. I hand mist in addition to the humidifier. The space heater is in the room but not in the chamber. There is no air filter. It is next to a glass block window.
I will post updated pictures Monday or Tuesday.

Well it looks like I kept the humidity too high over the weekend as it appears I have a little bacterial blotch on a couple of these. It also looks like about half the pins failed to mature. Either they are aborts or perhaps they are setting for a second flush. I really do not know but I do expect to find out.

Aside from my slamming down of the bag to disturb the culture I do not know what I have done different than others who have tried to cultivate it. Many people are more skilled than I. It has taken an extremely long time so I can see how problems can arise. All I can say is God allowed me to grow it. Workman was kind enough to share his experiences with me and inspired me to try this one again. This was my second attempt with this mushroom. My advice as always is to keep trying and never give up.
The stems are now 2x as large as the photo above. I am going to wait another day to take photo's. Veils are just begining to break.
Any one who wants a culture of this can get one from SporeWorks. I may also be interested in trades for other gourmet/medicinal mushrooms.

Ok, here are the latest pics. you can see the bacterial blotch stunted/killed the one while the others continue to grow. Notice how they are bending towards the light source(s). The pictures are from different angles and not a progression of age.
