better way to avaiod this is don't tape the holes, they don't need to be taped, the half inch of vermiculite is your contaminant barrier... tape doesn't add any extra protection and often will lead to complications like what you mentioned...

That sounds like too much water in the pan or too much of a 'roaring' boil.

I'm working on avoiding the same sucking air problem. In my last attempt to eliminate the vacuum, I altered a couple of my jars to support a polyfill plug. If you give this a go as well, remember to place a little foil over the jar's lid during the PC'ing.
The first round of injections went well. As an added benefit, I shouldn't need to add another filter to the jars later on.

the suction comes from the jars losing a little water in the form of steam, then cooling down... if the seal on the jars is airtight, there will be a bunch of suction when pulling off the lids/ removing tape for the first time... leaving the lid slightly loose, installing a polyfill hole, or leaving the holes untaped will all solve this problem... i like to leave the lids loose when pcing, and then tighten them while i'm unloading, i use tinfoil to cover the holes and never tape them.... I'm accustomed to getting zero contams...

Anytime you heat up and cool down a jar it's gonna suck up some air. I have never had a problem letting my jars cool on the counter and suck up the air in my kitchen, but if one was so inclined you could leave the jars to cool inside the sealed pc or sterilization pot. All this moving about of air is beneficial and perfectly normal.
By the way all this gets much simpler when you ditch the dry verm layer tape the holes and use a plug of polyfill for gas exchange.
