Cloning and splitting mycelium are two different things. You can only divide mycelium so many times before senescence kicks in. - the loss of a cell's power of division and growth.

So if you have a colonized bulk sub and split that in half to colonize another sub you'll be reducing the amoint of grain in the sub by half every time. This is called super spawning and it doesn't work well.

As has already been said, eventually it gets too old. I think people generally like to limit g2g transfers to 5 "generations" or so. Depends on the culture.

Personally I think a multispore culture with lots of genetic diversity would be able to last longer than a mono culture with low genetic diversity but that's just an idea, no experience or proof to back that up.
