Trich on most of my mini tubs when using pasteurized dung
    #25031689 - 03/01/18 12:59 PM (6 years, 1 month ago)

Hey wassup everyone.
Ok, so honestly, shoebox tek was ridiculously successful. Holy crap, I picked a good clone with an amazing tek.

But I do have an annoying problem. I use frank's dung tek because I can get composted stable waste for 7 bucks a cubic yard around here, and it stretches coir immensely.

I pasturize in 4 filtered spawn bags via frank's tek, the dung rolled into a a sorta log in the bag to allow for 4 evenly filled bags to fit in a presto cooker pot. I put one thermometer in one of the bags to get an even idea of all the bags (i think this might be the failure point), and pasteurize. It reaches the right core temps, doesn't go over 160, all that.

I let it cool overnight, and mix it with soaked, clean spawn. And fuckin' hell, out of 12 boxes, only 4 didn't trich and make it to second flush(though all produced nicely, anyways).

What am I doing wrong? Should I buy one of those nice multi-probe thermometers off amazon? Or should I just switch back to coir? Coir is definitely less messy, I'll admit

well.. either your spawn isnt as clean as you think or you botched the pasteurization:shrug:

and what do you mean by 'soaked' clean spawn?

How long did you pasteurize?  If time is correct and the process was effective(which is should be if time/temps are followed correctly), then the issue is likely your spawn.

Edit:

Frank has a link in his collection that talks about what he calls "dunking" colonized spawn. The experiments show a huge increase in spawn viability, and I've been using it since my first bulk grow.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17616982#17616982

Break up spawn, soak the spawn in room temp water for 20 minutes, drain for about an hour (way longer than most, since I'm soaking around 20 qts of spawn at once), mix with pasteurized sub. My shoeboxes usually colonize within 3-7 days, it's fucking nuts.

I'm thinking it's a botched pasteurization. One or more of the bags didn't reach a proper core temp, I'm guessing. I'll probably need to get a 4 probe thermometer to keep track of all the bags. They got really nice wireless ones that allow monitoring spawn cooking on the propane range from the comfort of the indoors

I start the timer for one hour once the core reaches 140 F. I even do that with coir because I'm a stickler

run your pasteurization boil real slow.. slowly heat the bags up so they can all get to 160 together.
take your time at first until you get it down. personally i used to pillow tek. its messy as all fuck but works for large amounts.

The pillow tek messes up the field capacity for me. Squeezing out huge quantities of dung, coir, verm, and gypsum mix isn't viable in my current 1br.

I'm pretty sure my cook is slow. It usually takes 4 hours or more to reach 140. I turn off the heat once it reaches about 90 degrees.

Don't ask me how I keep a full grow outfit in a one br. Just know it requires a fuckload of shelving and creative storage

If you're hydrating your sub at the time of pasteurization, ie, not letting it soak overnight, you could try hydrating with hot water to help the internal temps reach past temp easier/more evenly.

That's what I'm thinking. Just gotta figure out what the hottest tolerable temp is for my hands

I'm guessing it's around 105-115 F, judging by typical shower/hot tub temps

Agreed.  Try some smaller batches.

Try not soaking your spawn, just mix it with the pasteurized bulk.

Yeah those bags of composted poo I use sometimes. Sometimes there are some pieces of woodinside watch for this. I get better result with the standard horse poo and with coir. But like you mentionned those bags are "convenient". Great to add substrate when a brick of coir is not enough, but by his own , I dont like it. Franks pasteurization tek is great !
