I've been playing bass for about 30 years now. Over that time I've learned/have been taught to listen to different forms of music. I have many, many "favorites". I'll start it off... This is a live video of Alain Caron and his band playing Slam the Clown.

Check out Donald "Duck" Dunn.
Played with Booker T. & the M.G.'s and as a session bassist for Stax Records.
Probably my all time favorite bass player.

Here's another bass player I like a lot... I've seen him several times live in his own band and with Steve Morse. His name is Dave LaRue...

I like my dad the best. Everyone stole his sound. He used to play jazz in clubs in New York and do any sessions he could and went on to play sessions in Hollywood. He's on a million hit records. He made a few million dollars which is incredible for a session player. He still plays cello these days. He started with cello at a young age and switched to play bass because he dug jazz. He moved out to Hollywood to play on Frank Zappa albums and met my mom and got into the business of playing soundtracks for movies and a lot of rockers and such want to sweeten up their tracks with some strings! He gets a "movie check" once a year, royalties for movies he's played on.

He was trained to play classical music at a young age on cello, but rebelled and ended up shooting heroin in the New York jazz scene and he used a lot of peyote before it was illegal. He used to have all these Huichol yarn paintings all over his house with the deer, the shaman and the peyote buttons. He inspired me to take psychedelics. He was one of my main inspirations along with my mom. I had some friends in college who tripped and my friend Louis who listened to the Beatles sort of catapulted me into tripping. My dad's house always reeked of really dank bud smoke and there were crumbs of pot all over the computer table all the time! HAHA! He's played with Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, The Eagles, Lou Reid, Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Brian Wilson, The Beegees, The Platters, The Temptations. Whenever I used to watch a movie he'd tell me if he was on that movie! He also went on to play music for video games. If he got a record check he'd be super rich. My dad always wanted me to play keyboard so I could get a job playing sessions. He thought the future was in the synthesizer. It was forced on me so I never enjoyed it, but I got really hardcore into martial arts, including weaponry, which is my specialty. I specialize in the double straight sword with two edges. It's totally disgusting to fight with blades and I always have the taste of violence on my tongue!

There is some good shit in here.
I don't know why my link don't work but this is "John Entwistle amazing bass solo." YouTube.
The best bass solo I've ever seen.

probably an obvious choice but i'm a big fan of phil lesh.
i'm also a big fan of james jamerson and carol kaye's session work, as far as a more subdued style. charles mingus and ron carter are some favorites on the stand up.
don't know why i'm blanking so bad on bassists, but the bass is one of my very favorite instruments. been playing since i got put on upright bass in 9th grade orchestra, but only recently started taking it seriously.
