Pressure cooker overflows after an hour
    #24936878 - 01/23/18 05:43 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

Hi ya'll.
I just tried using a stovetop pressure cooker for the first time and I'm struggling. Twice, after about an hour at 15 psi the pressure cooker starts leaking from the vent pipe. The first time I shut it down. The second time I let it go a little, it stopped, then completely overflowed. The bags also blew out the second go round.
I have a 23qt Presto. I filled it with 3 qts water and 6 bags of sawdust about 1.5 lbs each. I didn't seal the bags, just pressed air out and tied the ends once.
Is it possible that this is an overfilling issue? The bags did stick out over the 2/3 fill mark. Could 3  qts of water be too much? Should I be doing something different with the bags to prevent blowout or could it be from pressure cooking them twice?
Thanks for any help!

Have the same PC. I always have a little bit of water coming out
of the vent thingy.

How much water are we talking about here?

Too much water - enough to spill off the stovetop and onto the floor.

Definitely putting to much water in there. Put your bags/jars in first then pour in some water until it is approximately 1.5-2 inches up the side of whatever your sterilizing

I have same PC and I fill it just past the rack and it will support a 2.5 hour run no problem. Never measured how much water though.

2.5-3 quarts doesn't seem like too much. I've put way more that
that in there when I'm doing agar.

Now you are adding the water after you put your bags in, right?

I used a the rack that comes with the pressure cooker and added water before the bags since I was really packing them in tight. Reduced the water to half an inch above the rack and no more geysers! Thanks!

3 quarts is exactly what the user manual says to use. That's quite a bit over the rack. You'll probably end up warping your pc if you regularly use that much less for 2 hour runs.

Op there's a tek called the ham cram or something like that you can dig up. It shows you how to safely pack your pc with spawn bags. That might help you out.

if you run your cooker at 14psi
or 15psi with added weight it will lose hardly any water even over a 2 hour cycle.
