Agar separates from nutrients after PC
    #24815240 - 11/29/17 07:48 PM (6 years, 3 months ago)

hey there okay this is my first post and i created an account because turns out i have a few very specific questions...

SO

I'm using dog food agar (1000 mL spring water, 40g dog food, 20g agar, and 2g yeast). I load them into half pint mason jars with A hole or two at the top stuffed with polyfil for inoculation. I put them to PC at 12psi for 45 minutes, wrapped in foil to prevent any moisture in the polyfil. When I took it out of the pressure cooker the nutrients had separated entirely from the agar (agar on top, dog food at the bottom).

I'm thinking this may have happened because at one point i had to switch pressure valves, and so took f the original 10 psi pressure valve to switch it for twelve but it was quite a moment before i could get it on so my PC was letting out full steam for a minute after already at pressure.

Was this it? Is there another reason this may have happened? Any help from any experienced cultivators would be of tremendous help.

Was the agar set?  Or still warm liquid.

I took the agar out of the PC once it was pretty much set. it may have been a little fluid but definitely not liquid. They seemed set.

Maybe pull them sooner and give a swirl.

Although agar typically isn't very deep. How full are these half pints? I'd say the nutrition is enough for what dissolved.

Do you think it was too much PC time?

I'm thinking there was a release of pressure when i did that valve thing that may have caused it.

The jars are about 5/8 to 3/4 of the way full.

I did this because i thought my syringe would have to reach into it but i recently learned that i can just put drops on the surface.

Also its been about 6 days and nothing (not even bacteria has grown) which makes me think one of two things is true:

Either i PC'd it for too long and the nutrients caramelized/complex sugars were degrade (not extremely likely)
OR that the agar being all the way at the bottom (maybe 2-3in under the surface) makes it impossible for anything on the surface to be fed.

I'd go with a half inch of liquid.

Pain to work with high glass sides tho.

Most of us use 4oz containers.

Too much dog food.  Only half the amount you used is required for 1000ml of water.

I read on the forums that you could use anywhere from 20-40 g. IIRC something about nutrients can be anywhere from 2-4% or 3-5% or something.

Have you heard of this/what do you think about this?

Dog food has a tendency to settle and depending on the type/brand/quality, some  may settle more than others.  I’d say it’s better used in a pour method so you can swirl to ensure it’s good and suspended when pouring each plate.

I wouldn't use so much according to the recipes I've read.  Mycolorado brings up a good point.

MEA is the best recipe for no pours as everything is fully dissolved very easily
