PMP and Humidity

Hey im using a 111 queart rubbermaid with a large air pump with lava stones instead of geolite but i am having trouble getting it past 90% humidity. Ive sealed it as best i can with only 1 hole to let the air out. Ive sprayed the walls, hung wet paper towels inside it, tried mixing perlite in with it and still no luck. Anyone else use the large rubbermaids that knows how to keep real high humidity?

my dog uses the setup similar to yours, lava rocks instead of geolite as well. humidity isnt a problem, i dont calibrate it, but things grow nicely in it if its the typical rubber maid style hes familiar with, check underneath the handles on the tub. in his, there were 5-6 1/2 inch square holes under the handles, barely visible and easily overlooked. could be causing the leakage of humidity. as my dog too thought it wasnt 'enough' humidity in there, so he just taped them. with or without, things went fine, but maybe this is the case for your dog too? -jb

its used in soils to help retain moisture. walmart/lowes/meijer are all stocking up on it now for the spring season (areas vary)
nope..just add some h2o2 to it and your fine

I just pour it from the bag into the colander, no h2o2 added. Wrap a shirt around your face or do it outside, so you don't breath the dust.

so u would put it in a strainer to drain off liquids?? i thought perlite was dry and didnt need to drain any liquid out of it. i guess my main question is: what kind of preparations, if any, do you need to do to the perlite before putting it in ur terrarium?

I put in the colander, wet it, drain it. put it in the chamber. It woks a lot better than just dumping in dry perlite and then pouring in water.

If your doing the poormans pod I came up with perlite isn't that great in it. Better to just use the perlite alone. Messes with the airflow a lot. When doing the lava rock or geolite make sure you have 4 inches of it and 3 to 3 and a half inches of water over the airstones or bubble wands depending on what you use.

ok, now im confused, so i read in the FAQ that you can just put like a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of water and like 1 or 2 inches of perlite in your terrarium and it didn't say anything about any air pumps. what do you mean "its better to just use the perlite alone"? do you mean with no water or no air pump???

That's not a poorman's pod, or a pmp.
