89% humidity enough for cakes?
    #2436967 - 03/15/04 09:05 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

is it enough humidity for cakes to fruit?  i have had them in there for 24 hours and humidity is just under 90% when i spray.  i am using perlite.  does this sound right?  i am just a little paranoid. :gd_icon:

If you're using a rubbermaid or something similar that is not extremly large (under 20 gallons), 2-3 inches of perlite with 1-2 inches of water will give you near 100% RH, assuming you let the lid on and it kinda snaps (no need to be 100% airtight).

If you do it this way and your hygro reads 89%, then your hygro need some calibration.

And if you really feel like you need more humidity in here, you can cover the walls with some wet scott towels. It will helps.

Just throw your cakes in here, give it some light and 3 air exchange a day and you're on the way for a good flush.

Back when I was using perlite and water only, I tried a lot of thing to tweak the humidity. I was then aiming for 90% for some casings and no matter how much perlite or water I was using in here, I was always getting 99% RH.

Conclusion : perlite will give you 99%-100% unless your terrarium is not relatively airtight.
