How can I tell if my WBS jars aren't too sticky/wet?
    #2403297 - 03/04/04 03:15 PM (20 years, 28 days ago)

I made 7 WBS jars doing the following: soaked wbs for about 10 hours, then rinsed them off for about 5, and then let them drain for about 10 minutes. I put in 125 ml grain, and 110 ml water into pint jars. I PC'd them for 1 hour. after steam subsided i took them out and shook them, many of them looking pretty wet and sticky. That observation was made about 1/2 an hour after i turned the PC off. Some of the jars, when I shake them around, the stuff moves, but it seems to stick together a lot, so I'm just wondering how sticky is too sticky and If I should not innoc them or do over.

Then, after that I did 7 more jars basically the same way, but i put a bit less water. i'd guess more like 105ish. Have yet to check those, but I hope they are better. Any help is appreciated.

it's your call, without seeing them it's tough to say.  But it does sound like you used too much water.  2:1 ratio of seed to water (by volume) works fine for me, and that's without pre-soaking.  I use 2/3 cup seed(dry) and 1/3 cup water in my pint jars routinely and haven't cooked up a bad batch since I started using that recipe a few years ago.  Breaks up easy and colonizes quick.  This probly should have gone in general cultivation BTW .

i dont think your supposed to add any water after a 10 hour soak. You may have added way too much water.

sounds like you have too much water. you're doing too many things, either let them soak and PC them, or add that ratio of water/dry grain, not both.

toss those jars and start over.
