LOOK!! Can I freaking case yet...dammit!!??!?!
    #2399476 - 03/03/04 04:26 PM (20 years, 29 days ago)

Alright...these jars of Mazetapec (sp?) jars have been colonizing for over a freaking month in my incubator.  Some of the jars have holes within the substrate due to me not trying to pack them overly tight.  Also, a couple of the jars have some standing moisture within them.  I'm going to case these and I was curious if I could go ahead and clean them up and case them all, or just case a few select jars?  What do you guys think??  EXPERTS ONLY

Furthermore, some of the jars look like they have open areas that aren't colonized.  That's probably because their is excess moisture in most of the jars and some of the substrate mix splash up and stuck to the walls of the jar.  The bottoms of just about all of the jars are completely colonized so I would assume the inside is as well.  I just want to fucking case and fruit dammit!!

Have you given them any air exchange? Loosen the lid a little (or untape the holes in the lid) and turn it upside down. There's no reason a half pint should take longer than a month.

im not a pro, but i can tell you those are not 100% colonized... i would reccomend waiting untill they are fully colonized... be patient man, it takes a while

Well, you can try to make a big case IMO, but I would
keep a couple of jars in incubation and see if they get 100%
colonized.
In the pic I can't see the lid, are the holes tapped or not?
Remember to provide a good air exchange to the cakes

And what about the temp in your incubator? 1 month for an
almost 50% colonization is sooo much...
Don't worry about the drops inside, it's quite normal till
they won't be floodin' the jar.

Well in awnser to your title question, no, there no way near ready to use yet.

In awnser as to why, what air exchange are you using on the jar lids?
The uncolonised patches look pretty dark, i have seen bacteria contams look like this, also too much water content can cause this darkening.

i think that is where ya went wrong...you packed your substrate, period. dont pack at all...your substrate needs to be airy to grow properly

im no pro either, but, i think that could be why they are extremely slow in an incubator.

 very good point. Could also explain the darkness in
the substrate.
Though, pics 5 6 and 7 look very much like they have
some form of contaminant

I'm going to loosen the lids on them and hopefully that'll make the rest colonize.  I know they aren't ready either, it's just that what the fuck is making them take over a month!!??

As far as packing them too tight, well, I disgree with that.  It's hard to tell from the pics, but there are a couple of jars that are packed so loosely that the substrate doesn't form an entire cake.  Almost like a piece of it is missing.  That's another reason it looks dark in some areas.

Also, I don't believe there are any contams whatsoever.  As I said, it's dark in a lot of places along the walls of the jars because the excess moisture took pieces of the verm and stuck it up against the walls.  I'm just going to go in right now and loosen them up.  We'll see how that goes.  If anything, I have 4 new pints going that are in much better shape

Tub-n-Tub with a 100watt heater. My thermometer reads 85F most of the time. I'm assuming that since I left tin foil over the holes in the beginning, and having some temp issues then as well, it has stalled my growth. Furthermore, I think the excess water has caused this too.

I'm just tired of fucking wondering what is taking these so long. I'm too clean for any contams, so I'm almost certaint that is not an issue. Like I mentioned before, I'm going to loosen the lids and see if by the weekend any progress is made. I did have the jars upside down before and that's probably why the bottoms are almost colonized.

As far as the one jar goes that doesn't look like much has colonized...well, that's the jar I'm talking about that has a big chunk of substrate missing.

When you crack the jar lids, smell them.
I have a feeling a sour smell might come
from the jar that is 5 6 and 7, I hope I am
wrong.

Say there is a jar or two that has contams. Is that going to run my new jars that I just put in the incubator??

I just loosened the lids so hopefully that'll take care of it.  I'm not going to even look at the jars until this weekend.  I smelled them too and the only thing it smelled like was a sweet smell.  So, I'm assuming no contams, nor did I see any

GL!

>As I said, it's dark in a lot of places along the walls of the jars because the excess moisture took pieces of the verm and stuck it up against the walls.

"excess moisture" can stunt colonization growth as well. I had some jars which took about 5 weeks as the substrate was too wet to begin with. They entire project suffered because of the over-incubation. You wanna get those jars to colonize ASAP.

Smelling them isnt going to hurt you, contams
arent quite that powerfull.
A sweet smell isnt good, it also points to bacteria.

the only jars that are maybe ruined, are the ones that smell
sweet. All you should be able to smell is a very fresh shroomy smell.

I am going to pass something to you that someone passed down to me when I started growing. Patience is the most important aspect of growing. you cant play god with these fungus. You have to be able to recognize what is working for u and what isnt and adjust accordingly. If you fail and have contaims, accept it and move on to the next batch. Its better to throw something that is contamed into the garbage than risk fruiting it and killing u or one of your friends because of impatience. Mushrooms are very picky as to what they like, and it may take some time before you figure it out, but once you do, they will let you know with huge flushes, very potent fruits, and the satisfaction that you acheived what you set out to do.

bah! the only reason not to fruit a not-quite-fully-colonized jar is becase the uncolonized substrate is the first place is that conatams can (and will) take a foothold. BUT if your making a CASING the uncolonized substrate is under the sterile non-nutritive casing layer, creating a contam barrier.

When I make a casing i spawn a cake to sterile worm poop and verm, and apply my casing to that...coop would be dealing with WAY less contaminatable substrate. If he does everything right, I don't think his cotam risk is any higher by doing it now.

Just scrape off the extra substrate and case the fuckers or use them as spawn.
