Pressure cooker and jar lid question
    #2399204 - 03/03/04 03:22 PM (20 years, 20 days ago)

I am getting ready to PC my 1/2 pint wide mouth mason jars using the PF Tek.

The metal lids have the rubber sealing edge upwards and masking tape over the holes.

My question is if anyone has opinions with tight lids vs. loose during cooking and is tin foil really needed in addition to the tape?

Also, what thoughts does anyone have reqarding PSI and amount of time needed for the best results?

I should also mention that I live at an alt. of 4500ft

thanks

use tin foil!!!!! leaving the lits upsidedown doesn't make a seal.

is the tape on the top of the lid or on the bottom? the tape should be on the top of the lid. I would keep the lid loose. use tin foil and sterilize for 30-45 mins.

Yes, the tape is on top of the lid.

What is the purpose of the tin foil if there is tape over the holes to protect from water dripping in?

water will find a way of getting in.

all I do it to my PF jars are:

place lid with top up(normal) holes covered. the the band on it screwed half way. that way there is no seal but if air needs to be released it can be. tin foil is used also to mark the jars with info(ie. with syringe, with spore name on them). I noramlly use to pieces of tin foil to cover the jars since if you get any water in them the jars are useless since the water ratio is different(not all the itme but most of the time)

its better safe then sorry.

peace

The reason you need foil is because of the temperature difference between the lid of the pressure cooker and the outside air. There will be condensation on the lid that will 'rain' down on your jars. If no foil, that water will get through the jar lid and into the inside of the jars.
