The Matrix (and a quiz)

"In the near future, a computer hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) discovers that all life on Earth may be nothing more than an elaborate facade created by a malevolent cyber-intelligence, for the purpose of placating us while our life essence is "farmed" to fuel the Matrix's campaign of domination in the "real" world." "Computer hacker Thomas Anderson has lived a relatively ordinary life--in what he thinks is the year 1999--until he is contacted by the enigmatic Morpheus who leads him into the real world. In reality, it is 200 years later, and the world has been laid waste and taken over by advanced artificial intelligence machines." Those are just movie reviews, just in case someone didn't see "The Matrix. Lately, I feel a little like Neo must have felt. I have been living in my own little world, and I didn't mind it being little, because to me, it felt like it was enough for me to handle and I didn't really want to see anything else in the world anyways. Too much information. Only want it on a "need to know" basis. Well, then God opened my eyes a bit a couple of years ago. I've been on a quest since then, not realizing that the cumulative effect of the knowledge acquired might be that I start to see that the world isn't exactly what I thought it was. Not that I'm sure, yet, what it is. But it's not the world in which I thought I grew up. So, I had joined other forums, and now I'm here. I've been reading the papers a bit more. Reading books. Things are barely starting to fall together. And so now I think I'm starting to see that it's not all what I thought, but not that that means I'm going to quit. Just makes it more interesting. Now, take this quiz to see which "Matrix" character you are, and then post your results for us to laugh at: Quiz My results: "You are Neo, from "The Matrix." You display a perfect fusion of heroism and compassion." List of Characters

Okay, we can't all be Morpheous. Someone go change your answer on the quiz.

You are The Oracle, from "The Matrix." Wise, kind, honest- is there anything slightly negative about you? You are genuinely supportive of others. Careful not to let people take advantage of you, though.

You are Agent Smith, from "The Matrix." No one would ever want to run into you in a dark alley. Cold as steel, tough as a rock, things are your way or the highway.

I'm surprised there wasn't more discussion here about the religio-philosophical underpinnings of The Matrix series. The authors admittedly drew upon Buddhist themes, but even more evident was classic Gnosticism.
The Machine-Mind which 'personified' itself in the last film before Neo ['New,' or an annagram for The One] as a monsterous metal mask, is the Gnostic Demiurge - the lower 'God' who believes that He is the One and Only God, and who creates the phenomenal world [The Matrix by way of parallel]. In Gnosticism, the Demiurge is a sort of aborted attempt by one of the major inhabitants of the True Godhead [Pleroma, or 'Fullness'] - Sophia [Wisdom] - to create a world without her Cosmic Consort. There is this regress from Eternal Cosmic Couples [Syzygies] out of the Pleroma, just as (by parallel) the Machine-Mind originally derived from Mankind's-Mind, which in turn were created by Elohim [Plural Name for God in Genesis], which in turn derive from the Utterly Transcendental Godhead Whose Name is Unutterable. Neo's glimpse of the sun and sky above 'the illusion' represents a glimpse of The True Godhead - at least It's awe-inducing representation as light and space.
Neo, of course, is the Redeemer-figure, who is initiated into the True Mysteries by Morpheus [Greek god of dreams], in a Jesus-John the Baptist archetype. There is a 'Keeper of the Boundary' in the Gnostic scheme [named Horus, but not connected to the Egyptian deity] which prevents Sophia from creating more problems. Sophia requires self-control, and, so does Neo as he begins to unfold his abilities. Redeemers always embody Sophia-Wisdom [and it just occured to me why the Oracle replaces Neo at the bottom of the highway battle-crater. In fact, it further occurs to me that 'Krater' in the Greek means 'vessel,' as in 'Pantocrator' as a Name for Christ which means 'Vessel of the All']. Above the door in the Oracle's [Boundary Keeper], is a sign that she points out to Neo - "Temet Nosces" - which can be translated in Latin as 'Know Self-Control' [where Nosces is Latin for the Greek Gnosis]. It is like the notion of Christ 'emptying Himself' of Divinity ' - self-limiting, and the rejection of the devil's offer of worldly power. Parallels are plentiful, but I don't want to be more of a bore.
Although heretical, and not to be read literally-historically, the Gnostics held that Reality was other-than the the historical-material drama that exoteric Scriptures illustrate. This brings me to a Brewer & Shipley tune called 'The Light' which if I recall the more relevant lyrics ran something like: There was a Man from midnight - Who walked along a road - A Light was His possession - It was a heavy load - He wrapped It all in colors, but left the binding free - For those who felt the hunger, and truly longed to See...
Say goodnight Gracie.

You are The Merovingian, from "The Matrix." Wit and danger, with a French twist. You are adamant about the slightly materialistic things- power, wealth, posession.
Dominating, aren't we?
I'll take that.

It is quite obvious the Wachowski brothers have tripped a few times before. The dialogue, the visuals, and the plot all indicative of psychadelic experiences I've had. Huzzahh.. I'm Joey Pants!@ You are Cypher, from "The Matrix." Selfish, disllusioned, you are misguided at times. You deviate from the "right" path.
