No Humidity?$#@
    #2376730 - 02/25/04 04:39 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

I bought a coolmist humidifier and I got a 4" tube running from the fan output to my fruiting chamber but the RH is still around 85%, what gives?

If you have cakes, you want near 100%.
If you have casings, you should have from 90%(post pinning) to ~100%(pre pinning)

85% is good for casings, but for cakes, you'll need more humidity...an ultrasonic will give you the desired humidity (too much in some cases), but doesn't provide any air exchange. Perhaps perlite on the bottom of the chamber in addition to the coolmist would provide you with sufficient rH. Remember, most hygrometers you find in stores are not really that accurate...persistent moisture on the sides of the chamber is a better indicatior of proper humidity....EDIT- Listen to Anno...I am just giving my two cents worth...

A lot of people who run cool mist humidifiers arent able to maintain high enough humidity because they actually leave the unit running too long, causing too much airflow in their terrarium. You should be able to bring a very large terrarium to 98% RH with 1 Vicks / Kaz V400 Humidifier ducted the right way, by putting it on a timer 1 hour on 2 off.

Edit: I just re-read your post and noticed you said your humidifer has a fan. If you are using a humidifer that uses a cotton 'wick' and a fan, this is definately not the kind you want. A 'spinning disc' type model is more suited toward your needs.

What kind of timer would allow me to do such a timing cycle? Does walmart have one?

It has a round filter that draws up the water to the fan

Most stores will carry timers that have push-pull tabs that allow for 15 minute increments...or you could pick up a digital timer that can be set for one minute increments, or a different cycle each day if you wish

Lowes, Canadian Tire or Eckerds or any store like that should have a timer that can be set at 1 hour intervals, they have some that go down to minutes or 15 minutes. You seem to have the wicking type humidifier which really is not good for these types of purposes as molds and such can grow on that cotton wick and it doesnt provide much air exchange anyways. What you want is a vicks v400 model with a vent hose attached to the output going to your terrarium, dryer ducting works very well. The humidifier you are looking for is this one Vicks v400

Walmart didnt have a v400 so I picked up an ultrasonic and then went to homedepot and got a digital timer, is 1min on 20mins off a good cycle?
