Nice, I just went for my first hunt ever (SF bay) and found some as well.  Not sure on the species yet!

Read your posts from last year and got inspired to go out today!  These were pretty small.  Thinking about feeding the patch

Good to hear! About caring for the patch, it depends. Feeding just means placing new woodchips over the old, which you only need to worry about if the park or whatever doesn't do it every couple years and the woodchips are dissolving into dirt.

Watering the patch, on the other hand, can definitely benefit it in the short term. But only if you left some of the mushrooms. Once you harvest everything and you see no more pins, it'll be a month or so before you see another flush, so in that case it's best to leave it alone. If you left some young mushrooms, and the caps are perfectly moist and the spot seems to be irrigated every day or every other day, then you can get away without watering them, and you probably shouldn't. But if the mushrooms look in danger of drying out over the next few days, then you should water the patch...maybe 1 gallon per 2 square feet at most...and preferably cover the mushrooms with fresh pulled leaves and twigs.

But make sure you never get mushrooms wet that are already drying out. If the very edges of the caps are wrinkled at all, don't get 'em wet. (Though you can carefully water the woodchips beneath 'em.)

Nice work DavidReishi.  Very excited about the season officially starting.  Sage advice about maintaining a patch.

Sirtalis-  DavidReishi is correct.  Thems be cyanescens.  That might be an Allenii in the middle of the bunch in front left, but it's likely juvenile cyan or the angle of the shot minimizes the curve.  Allenii are more A shaped when viewed from the profile; straight lines. Cyanescens are curvey all the way around the edge.

Psilocybe cyanescens

Just now at a spot found two years ago...it fruited last year too. Looks like we're headed for an early start this year.

Went back to harvest yesterday's patch.  120 grams wet, and left about 100 pins :crazy2:

Accidentally took back a little mycelium on a few stems, so I decided to give a shot at some liquid culture.  We'll see if my back yard can explode next year!

Minutes ago. Psilocybe cyanescens mycelium.

Arghh...lanscapers razed this spot that was a heavy producer the last two seasons. Now it's 9-12 square feet of dry, exposed, mycelium-covered woodchips. I wonder what I should cover it with...a layer of casing soil perhaps?

*** ** ***** Since last season I added four new finds to the fam.

Leratiomyces ceres--at two locations in Emeryville today. These are the best "indicator" mushrooms, i.e. indicating that you're looking in the right places, especially nowadays in drought conditions. For woodchips need to receive a fair amount of irrigation to support these things.

SkagitHunter, I've been looking at flights to Washington for the past week. I'd love to hunt there for a couple days. But it's too damn expensive...I'd need to find at least a qp just to break even.

I know the feeling man, I want to fly down and hunt some allenii. (today I was just passing through)

I can't really justify the cost of a flight either, but I don't harvest mushrooms for profit. I hope you have some epic posts like last year. If you make it up here we'll have to check out some promising spots.

This morning:

Psilocybe cyanescens pins in the East Bay. These were the only pins that survived from the ones shown last week. It wasn't the two recent days of blistering heat that killed their flush-mates, as the place is great and irrigated daily, but rather trampling feet.

Dead Man's Fist in Richmond.

- HUNTING TIP #1 -

If you find yourself frustrated as to where to hunt for Psilocybes in the Bay Area, especially under drought conditions, it's helpful to remind yourself that what you're actually hunting for comes in stages.

First, you're hunting simply for locations with woodchips.

Second, within those, you're hunting for the locations where the woodchips seem to be periodically irrigated.

Third, at those locations, you're hunting for the sections of the woodchips that receive shade from the hot sun, i.e. that effectively retain moisture from the irrigation (and rain).

And fourth, at those spots, you're hunting for any and all mushrooms. Beyond that, it's not much more than being able to identify any Psilocybes that you find.

P. allenii today in Berkeley. I stumbled upon this tiny fruiting during a quick hunt of a location discovered last year. The place has plenty of irrigated woodchip beds with plently of shade, but they're still not moist enough to support mushrooms. Yet here and there are strewn little encloves with amazingly cool and moist micro-climates, such as the one pictured above.

P. allenii just now. These nasty little things I found suffering at the spot that opened this season's thread. Last season I discovered the patch with mature fruits on October 29th, but I remember thinking from the configuration of the mushrooms that it may not have been its first flush. (In first flushes, if I'm not mistaken, the mushrooms tend to spread out, not in tight clusters like second and third flushes.)

Anyway, this year, the patch must've begun fruiting in mid September, seeing as I found mature and rotted fruits in the first week of October. That's crazy if you ask me. No rain required, barely a cooling-down from the summer, and all other allenii that I know of are preceded in time by cyanescens. I think when the next flush comes around it'll be time for a serious spore-printing effort.

Bonus:

I've never hunted in SF proper, but if it's your first time then Golden Gate Park might be your best bet.
