gelatine instead of agar as a culture medium?
    #2358741 - 02/20/04 09:33 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

I wonder if anyone has had any experience using gelatine instead of agar as a culture medium? I have never heard of this being mentioned and wondered what people thought, as it is quite easy to buy. I plan to try myself but was just curious if anyone has tried it before.

I am aparently the only one that has dne it with success... it was common pre 1950, but agar has become so popular.... what nutrients are you planning to use

Plain old gelatine with no added nutes , will not work well .
Also remember gelatine is an animal byproduct , it is made from the hooves of goats and such .

Agar was developed to replace gelatin because gelatin is much harder to work with.

tried it once for fun, dont know what happened(possible contam) but it liquified in a day. agar is not digestable like gelatin is so gelatin will liquify if contaminated.

Thanks for your responses, I guess that if it worked people would already be doing it. I have doing some experiments with brown rice flower and water just wondered about adding some gelatine to make it thicker. At the moment I am trying out the water from boiled rye as a culture medium. The seems quite promising, the reason is, because the water is so dark its is easy to see white growth, I shall keep you posted.
