Bad News About the Tragically Hip

For 15-18 years The Tragically Hip were my favorite Canadian band (I guess Arcade Fire is now). The Tragically Hip play in theaters in the U.S and Hockey Arenas in Canada. IMO the first 6 albums are great and after that, mixed. The lead singer Gordon Downie has been fighting incurable brain cancer since 2015 and their last show is this month. The first two albums were hard blues/rock and after that they became more distinctive, but the sound of Downie's voice was always a trademark. His songwriting characteristic was to write lyrics about 2 or more subjects in every song. For instance "50 Mission Cap" commemorated bomber pilots who flew 50 missions, and was also about Mapleleaf's player Bill Birelco who scored the goal, in overtime, that gave the Leafs their 2nd to last Cup, and then was lost in a fishing trip and his body was never recovered until the year the Leafs won their last Cup, decades ago. On their 6th album (I don't recall the title of the song) my brother who is married claims the song is mainly about keeping a long term relationship together, but what made an impression on me was the first verse which is about Canadian puberty. It starts out talking about Hockey, and the verse finishes with " she held my hand and we walked home the long way, she was loosening my grip on Bobby Orr." Another big song is "26 years old (and never kissed a girl) about a young man who goes to prison for killing his sister's rapist. They are a great band, and he wont last too much longer, but when it happens RIP Gordon Downie.

I don't know if "26 years old" is a true story or not. It's on their first full album. They had an EP before that.

"Little Bones" on Road Apples is my favorite Tragically Hip song. IMO the first album and Road Apples are the most similar, a unique crafting of blues rock that targets fans of classic rock and alternative. After that they appeared to be looking for big creative shifts on each successive release.

Many NHL players are now paying tribute to Gordon Downie.
