Wasps and the Tarantula Hawk
    #23403066 - 07/02/16 04:33 AM (7 years, 8 months ago)

So I have a wasp nest, essentially in my room. Its built in a tricky spot, above my window AC, between the diagonal window pane and a plastic pane which was put in place to create a seal. Basically removal is going to be close quarters (within 1ft):
disable the AC, quickly nudge a corner of the plastic pane aside, spray and reseal.

From the brief glance that I had, the wasp looked like a yellow jacket, but the nest was combed like a paper wasp. The nest is about 3-4in across, only actually saw one wasp, hoping that's the queen and the first wave hasn't hatched yet

Anyways, I was reading about wasps (etc) and found out a little about another species called the "Tarantula Hawk".

Quote:

The female tarantula hawk wasp stings and paralyzes a tarantula, then drags the specimen to a specially prepared brooding nest, where a single egg is laid on the spider’s abdomen, and the entrance is covered. ... When the wasp larva hatches, it creates a small hole in the spider's abdomen, then enters and feeds voraciously, avoiding vital organs for as long as possible to keep the spider alive.[1] After several weeks, the larva pupates. Finally, the wasp becomes an adult, and emerges from the spider's abdomen to continue the life cycle...

... the sting—particularly that of P. grossa—is among the most painful of any insect... One researcher described the pain as "…immediate, excruciating pain that simply shuts down one's ability to do anything, except, perhaps, scream..."

Thoughts?

Actually fairly certain these are paperwasps, which is a relief.
I would just leave them bee if they weren't essentially in my room, that's too close for comfort.

Tarantula Hawks are pretty cool. They make me miss Zion.

I'm a fan of all parasitic wasps, and most things that parasitize arthropods.

Zion National Park, Utah. There is a species of t-hawk there that are all over the place. And amazingly dank climbing and canyons.

Haven't been there, but it looks beautiful. When you have a water source like a river nearby, Red Rock desert is among my favorite environments.

Word, and deep slot canyons to get out of the heat. Nothing like stepping from +100f into 60 while still outdoors.

Have been planning on using  WD40, don't want to use a pesticide on my AC unit and have poison spraying in my room for x-time. Soapy water sounds good too as it wouldn't reek, but it seems like it would require more spraying (and exposure time)

Are you asking if that it my hand? Yes. It's a male cicada killer taking a break. They don't even have a stinger.

 Those things scared the shit out of me until I found out what they are. They're huge. The first few times I saw it, I thought it was some Hulk version of a regular wasp.

The stinger of a female Pepsis grossa can be up to 7 mm (1⁄4 in) long, and the sting is considered the second most painful insect sting in the world; the most painful being that of the bullet ant

i was thinking it was number 1 in pain but number 2 doesn't sounds fun either.

they are all over out here but harmless unless you are an idiot and agitate them

pretty also

So the deed is done, I put it off for a few days because there's no way to access or even see the wasp nest without getting within 6'in of it. Anyways, I sprayed it down but found no wasps... this is odd because I saw one last time and it's midnight so there's no reason for the nest to be empty as far as I know.

I was thinking maybe this wasn't a paper-wasp nest, maybe it was actually the beginning of a beehive which was promptly cleaned out by wasps - and I happened to see one after the fact? Not exactly an entomologist, the empty nest confuses me.

Can anyone ID whether this is a paperwasp nest or the beginning of a beehive?

These pictures are shit, but I had to expose my hand to take them, rushed a little.

Good job for taking care of that wasps nest. I'm a big pansy about that stuff.
Tarantula Hawks are intriguing, and kinda pretty looking in a scary way.

It's probably a good thing they're not in my state(I don't think at least) if one ever got into my house it would be a full on battle. Or more likely, I'd run out of the house like it was on fire.

That picture reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth

Funnily enough I might have unwittingly handled a Tarantula Hawk recently

At least they've always in my limited experience been pretty docile.
