my jars are awesome
    #2318623 - 02/09/04 04:44 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

out of the twelve jars i did about 3 weeks ago, 9 of them are coming along beautifully.  this is my first grow attempt, and so far its looking good.  I have no contaminates and the jars are progressing wonderfully.  here are the better 9

here are the "runts" of my group

  what do you think?

i use fine grade verm without any problems. colonize half pints in about 7 days, full pints in about 10 days. the key is to not pack it down, just fork it in all fluffy like.

do you have any air exchange for those jars?

yes, the verm was fine, but it hasnt slowed too much. my incubator is perfect temp. those are pint jars. however next time, im going to go for 1/2 pint jars and some coarser verm...

They are awesome, but they have a long way to go.

Put some foil on 'em and loosen the lids a quarter turn.

Untape any holes.

how much longer would you think? also, would using wild bird seed be a better choice for next time I grow?

Your best jars appear to be only about 30% colonized, which would suggest they'll need twice as long as they've already been going, or another 6 weeks. They really should be almost done at 3 weeks.

Of course, if conditions improve, then they may very well take off.
This is what we're hoping for with some air exchange.

If temps are good and the substrate isn't packed too tightly (did you answer this one?, then lack of air would be the next place I'd look.

wbs is an excellent substrate and fast as lightning, but I'd suggest getting in tune with this tek first and then experimenting.

Another good strategy is to start some more jars soon so you won't have to wait thru the whole colonizing process, however long it takes.

My friend of a friends last incubation was with 12 BRF jars, and they took FOREVER to colonize. He had the holes taped down.... And it took a good 2 months to colonize fully....

Next time he'll try loosening the lids and/or removing the tape from the holes...

But on a positive note, he's now got his 12 jars cased in 60/40 verm/coir and it's exploding it's first flush right now....

that sounds awesome teknion. this morning, i put foil on my jars and loosened the lids a quarter turn, hopefully, this will increase colonization because of more air flow. i need some suggestions though. this is my very first grow, and i feel that i have read a fair share and know what all the teks say. my ? is should I go ahead and case my cakes, or just birth them when they reach 100% colonization? I feel that I have sufficient means of doing the casing, but I dont want to ruin my first batch

Yeah, do a casing of coir/verm...

When my friend of a friend first did cakes, he had them in seperate tubs of perlite and water... He found it was a bitch to fan all the time, so now he's got a little mini-gree nhouse, with perlite trays and bubblers, casing on top, and it's been a breeze to take care of.... and this is his second grow.....
