less nutrients encourage rhizomorphic mycelium

So i've tried several of the recommended mea recipes but they usually produce tomentose mycelium.  I've read that if you cut the nutrients in half it usually encourages rhizomorphic mycelium.  Would about 5-6 grams of malt extract, 12 grams of agar, and 500 ml distilled water be a good recipe?

i was under the impression that rhizomorphic growth would eventually just grow after a few transfers, and isolating sectors. especially when starting with MS, tomentose is pretty common until you transfer a few times..

at least this is how i understood it. i could be wrong, and please correct me if i am, TCs.

I agree i was just wondering if giving it a bit less nutrients could maybe jump start it quicker i.e. less transfers for rhizo to start showing plus using less nutrients would be cost effective. idk maybe its wishful thinking haha

It also depends a lot on genetics. My PE culture is never thick rhizomorphic even with 1g malt extract per 100ml of water. My MDK culture usually goes rhizomorphic on grains and GWA but almost never on MEA.

Yes, less nutrition will promote rhizmorphic growth but there are other factors at play, even what type of media your culture prefers.

LMEA seems to give me the best results on most cultures, except my MDK as I said. My martinque just loves to get really thick rhizo on LMEA. I use 6g light malt extract, 12g agar and 600ml of water for my LMEA recipe which is half of what the original recipe calls for. It is much easier for me to make out sectors when mycelium is rhizomorphic.
