newbie question about sporepint inoculation.

i've read many guides and almost all only speak of inoculation through a syringe. how do you go about inoculating with a sporeprint? is the only way to use one by turning it into a syringe?

yes u can turn the print into a few syringes then innoculate...or you can buy one from oh say ralphster, and be gauranteed to have a good, clean viable syringe to use

but does it have to be turned into a syringe or is there another way? i hear just scraping spores off the print works, but is it as effective and how much do u scrape off?

Nope, the spores have to be hyrdated for a few hours before your innoculate. Plus you'll run into bad contam issues if you try to scrape them into your substrate. There are several syringe teks on the shroomery's main site...check those out, shouldn't be too difficult.

They don?t HAVE to be hydrated before you inoculate, but it DOES speed the germination time by a day or 2, particularly if the spores are not completely fresh anymore.

well, don't they sorta have to be hydrated? wouldn't they just gather there water through osmosis of the substrate? i dry spore wont germinate will it?
but if you wanna scrape you spores into something, i suggest extremely clean environment, and you wont be able to use the PF tek with the standard dry verm layer. maybe try some karo/honey water.

Glovebox helps a lot with scraping.

Cool thanks for all the input. So for a beginner it would be better to start off with a syringe it seems. But, out of a sporeprint, how many good syringes are able to be made? jba6511 mentioned 3. I would think that the ratio would be 1sporeprint:1syringe or at most 1sporprint:2syringes because they are pretty much in the same price range.

Any place that sells farm supplies will have syringes and needles.
Tractor Supply, Farmer's Co-Op, etc...

A fresh dark print could make 20-30 syringes or more.
It doesn't take many spores at all to get germination.

i'm not trying to be a dick but it doesn't sond like you've done much homework.sounds like you got a free print and are trying to figure out how to use it. my suggestion is to try and get someone to trade you a syringe for your print. or spend a few bucks and buy a syringe from ralphster or another vendor. if you don't have good clean teks your print will be wasted. good luck.

DSD, ive done plenty homework. go ahead and check all the guides and i guarantee none of them mention using a sporeprint for innoculation, except the shroom wizards guide. besides that 1, all of them only mention a syringe. No I didn't get a free print and im trying to get the extra info I can not find to make sure I do everything correctly. Thanks for your support though.

If you're trying to decide between buying a print or syringe, go with the syringe. A print is a better bargain, being capable, as stated, of making many syringes, but requires some knowledge and technique. I think the reason for your confusion (and lack of search hits) on print teks, stems from a little misinterpretation of what you are actually trying to do. The info you are searching for (how to inoculate from a print) would be under syringe making teks or Karo / dextrose recipes for liquid culture inoc...as trying to directly inoculate substrate with spores would be an exercise in futility at best. Prints are generally used in these two ways, and ultimately will end up in a liquid suspension in a syringe for actual inoculation of growing media. Edited to say: There are advanced teks that use dry spores, BTW, but I think we should talk about those a bit later. HTH and good luck, Ben

Read what I wrote: "They don?t HAVE to be hydrated before you inoculate."
