Buying a Suzuki
    #23045583 - 03/25/16 06:12 PM (8 years, 23 days ago)

well, my little old subaru has fought the good fight and served me well despite putting it through hell, and the cost of the repairs required to pass inspection are now exceeding the value of the car and it's starting to rust pretty badly so the diagnosis is terminal. I need a new used car pretty quick, and a friend's mechanic/good friend has one of these http://www.edmunds.com/suzuki/xl-7/2002/consumer-reviews/ with 90,000 miles on it, new tires, freshly inspected, etc. The guy said he'd be willing to sell it to me for 2500. It's also a tasteful purple color and while I haven't carfaxed the VIN yet, it runs well, it's clean and it seems like a solid bet and I could always trade it in if I felt it necessary.

Provided that nothing like flood damage shows up on the carfax, I am probably gonna get it, but I realize that Suzuki pulled out of the US market and I'm concerned about getting parts. I'm a dipshit about cars so I'm obviously not going to be the one looking for parts myself and I realize that it might be a big pain in the ass.

thoughts.

sounds... ok.  Do you know anyone who knows about cars?  It's kind of hard to tell without seeing.  Buying a "new used car quick" always comes with some risk, but a little bit of knowledge can cut alot of that risk out.

Well, I've heard good and bad things about them, but your best bet would be to have a professional mechanic check it out before you buy.

You said friend's mechanic/good friend, because of that I have high hopes for the condition of the vehicle. That is unless you have a reason not to trust that guy. Licensed mechanics who do work at home can be shiesty. If he's a professional with a shop you could see reviews online maybe. Is the car certified? Is that even a thing down there?

All I can really add is that I've owned a 2003 Suzuki Aerio for almost a year now and I've found it to be reliable and economical. Suzuki makes pretty good vehicles, I'd get another one.

I always get an inspection and run the computer codes before I buy.

It's always a gamble. I learned mechanics myself so that I wouldn't have to take that gamble. Take someone that knows the trade with you to view.

Even then there's no guarantee. Something big might fail soon. It's just the way it goes. Best judgement only.

It will only destroy what you are not.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. Tire pressure and fluid levels are good. My brother works for Geico and gave me some decent input and tips, but unfortunately the shop is quite a drive for him and there's no way he'd make it out there without taking off from work which obviously is way too much to ask. I'm kind of on my own until I drive it back home and take it to my usual dude to look at. It seems like it's been really well maintained, barring any major damage that might show up in it's past. That's the biggest thing I'm worried about.

This will be my second car, I bought the subaru when I was a teenager and have been kind of racing to put it back together faster than it falls apart for the last couple years and I know repairs are an inevitable necessity with older cars, I just wanted to try and see if there were any specific breakdowns this make/model is known prone to at a certain age so I'm not too surprised. Especially if parts are going to cost me a fortune too.

Have any of you guys who own(ed) suzuki's had issues with that, I guess they'll still be making car parts and honoring warranties(obv. not applicable) for a good while, so maybe it's a non-issue for the moment.

The only thing I'm not fond of is the mpg, I'm going from about 30mpg to 16-19mpg for a v6,  and honestly it's way bigger than I need, I do haul a lot of shit around but I'll probably end up trading it in for something a bit smaller and newer by the end of the year at the latest, and it seems to hold it's blue book value pretty decently so approval is pending.
