End of Manuel Labor, ROBOTS replace human workers across the board
    #22941466 - 02/24/16 04:11 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

http://www.cnbc.com/2016/02/24/google-robot-is-the-end-of-manual-labor-vc.html

Theres a video in that link. The article can be found on the DrudgeReport.

-Will robots, like the one displayed in this video, become as able as humans in the broad field of basic jobs, Manuel labor?

-What changes in society will this bring forth?

-What monetary changes will take place due to Robots being humanity's slaves? If nobody has to work, what will become of money?

-Will Robots be used in warfare? Police forces?

Discuss.

Hey, robots can't grow mushrooms :cheersyoufuck:

That's racist to take Manuel's job from him.

If technology continues to develop, the capitalist model won't work in the traditional sense. Aspects of it could be kept surely, and there would still be jobs for humans. Honestly many jobs that could be automated will likely remain human-held-jobs for awhile, simply because business can't function if no one has the means to buy anything

Right. So how can they release this technology, that would lead to nobody having any cash?

That could force individuals to invest in their own small businesses, or 'illegal' businesses.
This would definitely end the war on drugs, because the more and more people without work, will be forced to create any kind of work they can think of to survive, and the most profitable would likely be drug related.

The idea is that production costs become so low and efficiency so high, that coupled with 3d printing tech anything can be made semi-locally for extremely low cost.. Which will take a general economic revolution to see practical since yes there wont be much general labor jobs anymore and people still charge a fuck ton to even live in a house - but we reach a certain point where the labor is so seldom done by humans that everything (beginning with basics) should practically be able to be socially distributed at no cost.

This is what I see happening as well.
Material items, technology, everything manufactured, (basic lifestyle items) could be rationed to the public at virtually no cost, eventually.

This does not go for 100% of jobs, but for the basic tasks, manual labor, low skill jobs.

This wouldn't happen overnight, but this will happen over time, relatively fast.
So, jobs that require skill, an irregular amount of knowledge or tediousness, (for example; growing mushrooms or plants), will be held by humans for a much longer time than, for example; working at McDonalds.

I'm biased but I think socialist policies and ideals will become more and more common and supported, inevitably, if any good is to come of this. Higher pursuits than simply making ends meet will become the norm, if this goes down in a non-fascistic way

In a slightly grim way, I think when the baby boomers die, which they are quite quickly now, the political reins are basically in the hands of the 90's-2000s generation which is the largest in US history.... And overwhelmingly, as Bernie has shown, we're much more interested in more socialst policy.

They're free, or super low cost.
But people will still have jobs for the foreseeable future.

The transition will be over time, so the cost will fall over time. Which will still lead to a Corporation profit.

that is why i said capitalism won't work, not without modifications.
Personally I'd like some kind of system where basic needs are assured, to the best ability of current technologies, but that motivated and talented individuals can still vie for the jobs that cannot be automated, or alternatively contribute to arts or academia and research in greater numbers, thus earning themselves prestige, fulfillment and ideally some extra luxuries.
things like travel and personal swimming pools, within reason

I know I personally wouldn't just sit on my ass with that set up, I'd simply feel more free to pursue whatever interest I think is most valuable to myself and society, without an underlying concern that if I choose an unprofitable line of work I might end up homeless

I mean, if that kinda of a model is even possible (obviously its far from realized in the world) I don't see why it isn't ideal

Aye, like you say I'm sure it'll pretty much only be basics that are covered... though basics would probably extended to a fairly decent PC... etc.

But by the time that sort of thing is coming into play, the luxury items might be something like a personal spacecraft.... sooo there's definitely plenty of incentive to make a little extra money :awesome:

Programmers and electrical engineers will have jobs until robots make other robots. Then they will be a reproducing life form and will kill all the humans.

yeah, I think it'll be a kind of slow transition from capitalism to socialism/capitalism hybrid, ultimately becoming a completely unrecognizable society within a couple of centuries. Hopefully something closer to utopia than what humanity has experienced thus far, but we've fucked good things up plenty of times before lol

The automation of jobs goes hand in hand with a hollowed out middle class, a Guaranteed Minimum Income, and more socialism and populist policies. People will riot for bread.

Some manual labour isn't efficient to do with robots. It is unlikely you will have a robot to clean bathrooms, construction, or daylight underground utilities. Intelligent routing paths for something as complex as storing building materials outdoors for later use while working around other trades is tough enough for humans. Let alone for humans to program robots to do it effectively.

There was a story a while ago about a dude's dog taking a shit in his living room and then his Roomba spread it to every corner of the room while he was away at work.

I'm not convinced humans are stupid enough to let that happen. I'm also not convinced just because robots gain sentience they will become homicidal. That sounds far too human of them.

I agree though that we will need working people for a long time, but not nearly as many as we need today. After a certain point how many electricians and engineers are really necessary? In the far future I could see employment rates reversing even, like 7% of the best of the best working in a more traditional sense and the rest staying out of the way and hopefully working on the betterment of their communities and all that

People won't riot for bread if they have bread...

The hypothesis was that IF material needs are met, what will humans do? The only reason those needs would not be fairly met, imo, is human greed.
