Jars with Synth Filter Lids - Do jars lose moisture over time?
    #22885184 - 02/09/16 08:55 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

So I have jars that I sterilized about 6 months or so ago and wondering if I should toss them or try and work with them. They have not developed any *visual* type of contams but I really am concerned with what the moisture content of the grains. They are quart jars filled 3/4ths of the way with rye grain and the plastic jar lids only has a synth filter on it (no injection port).

grains are cheap...why not take the day to prep rather then fuck around and risk weeks?

I consider grains too old after a few days. that rules out ever shipping them.

Good point. I do have empty jars that I am prepping, I just was wondering if it was worth even trying to use them. I have about 30 jars that were sterilized and look the same the day I prepped them.

If you are concerned about it weigh your jars in future and write it on them. Now you can easily track any loss, and can possible add in an excess of LC/LI/sterile water to make up for it.

I would worry about bacteria in the jars man I mean sterilization can hold it off for so long but six months?

:whathesaid:

Usually, germination takes forever in older grains, and bacteria is so much more common at the same time that it's not even worth the hassle.

Yeah you guys are right - i just was hoping to do a brute force method but I'm going to just redo these jars and not look back. Thanks for the tips.

They don't lose moisture but it evaporates to the top of the jars to the lid and where the moisture accumulates is where the pre-fruited pins appear
