grain usually goes bad
    #2284226 - 01/29/04 02:06 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I don't want to say grain ALWAYS goes bad for my friend but it almost always does and that's part of what's making it tough to diagnose what's going wrong. He either soaks it first or doesn't, it don't seem to make any difference. Then he pressure cooks it for about an hour. Then innoculate and usually he begins to get some mycelium growth but by the time that's started up a lot of the grains have sort of turned from looking wet and plump and orangish to looking sickly brown and a little wrinkled. The mycelium doesn't really keep going. Also that's when it starts smelling (the smell is sort of sweet and sour at once). I don't think the grains are drying out because when he gives up on one a jar and puts his hand in it still feels subtly moist. There is no mold visible however. A friend of this friend suggested that it may be bacterial contamination but it doesn't really help him diagnose how to fix the problem. Of these what are the most likely culprits?
Bad grains?
Pressure cooking not intense enough or long enough?
Pressure cooking too intense?
Terrarium's heater doing something bad?
Need to get new filter discs? (have been recycling old ones)

any help is appreciated

how do you prepare the grain and what is it? try simmering it for a half hour and drain for a half hour in colander then load and pc for 70mins, never had a problem that way. if it's popcorn you have to soak it for 24hrs then simmer.

talkin bout rye grain

most often he'll load it into jars and add water by the standard 100/110 ratio. he's tried giving it a little more water but that don't seem to help. he's tried soaking the grains overnight first and that don't seem to help. he hasn't tried pre-boiling them before PCing very often.

I'm having the same problem now. Also when I pc my jars the seed seems to more than double in size making my jars unshakable. I boiled for 30 mins, strained for about 15 mins, and pc'ed for 1 hr. I'm using white millet btw.

TO MUCH WATER!

Its not that grin usually goes bad, its that your friend is mixing the grain with way to much water. The brown shit is bacterial growth when the mixture is way to wet. The sour smell tells you your jar or substarte is CONTAMED!

Grain works well if you prepare it well. Remeber to only add 1/4 cup of water to every BRF 1/2 pint jar you make.

Edit-
Using RYE i dont know the ratio's there...but whatever you are doing add less water!

Listen to jtryptamine, the recipe works every time. The master chef I know adds rye to a pot and covers with tap water, brings the pot to a boil then reduces to 50% heat. Simmer for 45 minutes always keeping the grain submerged. Put in strainer / colander for 30 minutes and load and PC for 70 minutes.

Correct me if im wrong but with BRF, according to the PF tek aren't you suppose to only use 1/4 cup (60CC's) of water per 1/2 pint jar of substrate you make?

This guy I know has had only one grain experience, and it was a bad one. He then tried millet and see's no reason to ever bother with anything (in terms of spawn) again. It's retardedly easy.

Also to note, you should shake your jars while still hot to distribute the more moist grains that are on the bottom, make sure its safe to open the cooker first of course.

There is no need to worry yourself with adding exact quantities of water to the mix.  If you just follow instructions already given here on this thread you will be delivered from despair..

IF you simmer the grains for X mins (say 45) and then strain for 30 mins the water content of your grain will be perfect (or good enough).

Have faith and good luck.

The guy tried wheat and didn't get the hang of it at all. I've read people's posts attesting to its superiority, but am wondering if it is better than millet, wbs or anything else for that matter, for any reason.

The guy likes Hartz parakeet seed, but has never tried anything else.

Is the millet you guys are reffering to hulled or un-hulled? I would thin un-hulled. Just wanted to clear something up because I thought that hulled millet doesn't require simmering (or soaking) and can be prepared in much the same way as a regular BRF cake.

Un-hulled if used as a grain, hulled to make into flour for the PF tek style. Man just go buy some WBS, soak for 24, drain for 30, throw in your jar, PC, shake while hot and innoculate when cooled. So fucking easy. great flushes, faster.
