GIANT flower from bulb, smells like rotting meat, awesome.

This is from a plant that is commonly called a voodoo bush (at least that's what we call it). It looks like a fern. I have no idea what it actually is. The bulbs wouldn't survive our winter here so we dig them up and bring them inside, this happened last year too. Very cool. This flower is twice as big as the one that grew last winter and the flower hasn't even opened yet. When it does, it smells like rotting meat, really, really bad. I suppose this is to attract flys and promote pollenation.

Sweet eh?

Know what it is called?

Amorphophallus titanium aka "Corpse flower"

That is the one tha is commonly associated with the smell of rotten meat. It is very rare that one blooms however.

I'm not sure if that is what you have however, it could be.

Edit - after a closer inspection, I don't believe your plant is a corpse flower, though is it is still likely Amorphophallus, as many of them are known as Voodoo Lily. Does it look like a large flower or small bush/tree?

In the spring and summer it is a bush. The largest they have gotten was around 6 feet tall and we cut them down in the fall and bring the bulbs indoors, which is when they flower like that.

I know one tribe used to use the toxin from the pufferfish to indcue the zombie like state. Tetratodoxin is the pufferfish toxin and it causes paralysis.

lol.

with the carrion flower, i believe it is the underground tuber, not the rank, ass nasty smelling flower that is eaten. not sure how appealing that sounds either way, but if i found one and could be sure of the identification, i'd try it once.
