Tyvek instead of vermiculite?
    #2244621 - 01/15/04 04:43 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I have seen a few refrences in the past concerning the use of Tyvek filters instead of a dry vermiculite layer. A friend of mine has decided he might try his hand at mycology and was wondering how to substitute this method during pressure cooking, he is trying to avoid changing the water content in the jars.  An :mushroom2:y help for him would be much appreciated.

if you are doing the grains here is my tyvek recipe tyvek tek can also be incorperated into the pf tek but limit the hole size cause pure tyvek top will dry you out quick all in all the dry verm is the best for pf

Im a big fan of using no dry verm and pftek with polyfill...

www.fungifun.org/polyfill

I have not seen jars dry out using this method unless incubated too hot.

imo the dry verm layer is a waste of space....even coffee filters will work(tho I'd recommend polyfil or tyvek)

those are two different things..

Vermiculite...is the substrate..or used as a filter inside the jar

Tyvek is only used as a filter...on top of the jar

they are different in where they are used but they are the same in that they are both used to keep out contams......my point is a dry verm layer takes up space where substrate could be and does nothing more than polyfil tyvek or even coffee filters(on the outside of the jar of course :P) can do
