'With mushrooms like this, who needs to go to Mars?'
January 13, 2004

By Keran Ducasse

With the recent Mars expedition and talk about life on other planets, a couple were almost convinced the giant mushroom on their smallholding was an extraterrestrial creation.

The giant fungus was first spotted just before Christmas and it has been thriving since.

Piet and Hettie Kleynhans were away on holiday, but their domestic worker, Anna Thema, spotted an unusually large and strange-looking mushroom growing in their vegetable garden in Pyramid, Pretoria.

By the time the couple had returned, it had grown so that it was a staggering 63cm in diameter and 38cm high.

Piet Kleynhans said that in the 64 years he had been living on his plot, "I have never seen anything as strange as this".

But Professor Albert Eicker, a former head of botany at the University of Pretoria, said that while the mushroom was not common, he had seen a number of them and they always attracted attention because of their size.

Eicker identified the mushroom as a plevopus sudanicus.

"Whether it is edible is unconfirmed, so it cannot be classified as poisonous. But reports about intoxication have been made, so it is advisable to refrain from eating them."

Hettie Kleynhans is still convinced that the mushroom is the "most wonderful thing and is out of this world".

"Even though the mushroom is not from Mars, nature, which is on our doorstep, should be given greater attention, as many mysteries can be learned from it.

"We don't need to go to Mars to realise that," she said.
