need help with a special guitar tuning
    #2239003 - 01/13/04 11:20 AM (20 years, 2 months ago)

::sigh::

yes, i know... its pathetic i dont know how to do this. but do you think someone could help me?

i need to tune my guitar to this tuning:

C G D# A# F C

its should match up with the standard like this:

E  B G    D  A  E
|  |  |      |    |  |
C G  D#  A#  F  C

(edit: wtf? for some reason i cant get the lines to line up.)

if you could explain what fret to tune it by ear with, i can do it. i just have no idea what pitch D#, A#, F or even C is, and my tuner doesn't have those on it.

thanks

:spliff:

Starting with the low E, tune it down until playing the 9th fret is the same as the A string.....next tune the A string down until the 9th fret is equal to the D.....Tune the D down until the 9th fret is equal to the G....Tune the G down until the 8th fret is equal to the B string...tune the B down until the 9th fret is equal to the E....Tune the hight E down until the 5TH FRET ON THE B(or the now detuned G) is equal to it. Basically its all the 9th except the G string and the high E

Hope that helps and hope it makes sense too

If you plan on doing lots of different tunings like this, get a chromatic tuner, different from a guitar tuner.  That way you'll be able to tune to any pitch, not just to EADGBE.
if you follow Harbinger's way it'll work. good luck

btw, is that the tuning for Parabol(a)?

Yeah, it's no problem

I didn't really learn it from anywhere, I'm self taught really. Basically what you wanted was the whole guitar to be tuned two steps down or 4 half steps. So, instead of tuning it at the 5th fret I raised it 4 frets (which is equal to 4 half steps) so it would be lower.

The only site that comes to mind is guitar.com.  You can sign up (its free i think, dunno, haven't been there in a while) to get quite a few tips for basic stuff, even some more advanced stuff as well. Good luck man, if you're just starting out playing the best advice I can give you is to stick with it.

good advice, ill look into getting one.

No, it was actually the tuning to the song "Pink Maggit" by Deftones.

i think Parabola's tuning is : B E D G B E ?

but i could be wrong.

Yeah I think that is it actually, I remember reading an article where Adam Jones said he used some drop B/E tuning where only the E and A strings were detuned, leaving the rest in standard.

C Standard kicks ass... I can't really do much with C Standard on this bass guitar, though, because I like E too and I don't want to adjust anything to keep the same amount of string tension, because I would keep changing tunings.. tension is my friend. I have an old Yamaha back at home that I will use for C, though.

Unless that is the specific tuning you are going towards, you have two of the strings switched around. C Standard, low to high, is C F A# D# G C... hehe, I just realized you just had it going from high to low. Nevermind then. Well, anyways, I think most places will list tunings from low to high, so it might be a good thing to keep in mind...

And, if you are going to be playing in C Standard, I recommend you check out some IN FLAMES leads. Not too complicated, but highly melodic and fun.

And if you don't have Guitar Pro, you should get it.. its a program that allows you to sequence MIDI's with a tab interface... you can use it to download files as well and get playback.. definitely a good tool to have.  Guitar Pro's Website. Also,  MySongBook.com, a big archive of different tabs people submitted.. they tend to be a lot more accurate than the shitty ones you'll find elsewhere, since they have playback and you can defintiely hear it if it is wrong...

But ja, if you get it, check out some IN FLAMES, Dark Tranquillity, and Opeth! Great guitar stuff all around.
Peace.

And if you don't mind dropping it down to Drop C, play some Nonpoint.

P.S. Nonpoint is frickin' hard to play, I can only play like 2 songs, one of which I cannot play the whole thing.'

P.P.S. As much fun as low tunings may be,  I find the loss of string tension to not be worth it on my 24.75 inch neck length.. it's kinda like "Well, this is the same thing only lower.. so why don't I just play it higher and have better tension?" heh.

I mean, if you play along with a lot of stuff, that's the only reason I can see to use specific alternate tunings. (and this is the reason most people do it, I assume) But I don't like to change tunings a lot for the same reason you just mentioned (tension loss) so I'd have to do it on other guitars.. but my other guitars SUCK compared to my main one.

My baby: http://www.espguitars.com/images/guitars/EC1000_stbc.jpg

I guess I'm not "hardcore" enough to be way into low tunings.

Let's all play in A! DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN! (no offense meant to anyone, including korn.)

Nonpoint hard? I'm not trying to be an arrogant asshole, but how long have you been playing?

While we're on the subject of showing off our shit.....
That's mine....I just got it not too long ago, I fucking love it already though.

Like 3 years? I'm actually doing pretty well for how long I've been playing, or atleast I thought.. and I cannot for the love of me figure out most of their songs..

Edit: By the way, nice guitar.. I really like the all black and silver scheme, that would probably be the only other way I'd ever want a Les Paul.

try open D tuning...one of my personally favorites...especially when using a slide...tune low E down a step and tune the E B and G strings up to make a either D or D minor chord....freaking spectacular with a glass slide (or a lightbulb)...but then again im playin acoustic...im currently very dissapointed in electric guitars, but maybe a sweet les paul would change my mind

i usually use either E, drop D, or C. sometimes even drop C if i want to go real low, or play system of a down songs. a lot of people think drop tunings are lame because it's so much easier.. but you can do some stuff that would be impossible on standard tuning, like power chord hammer-ons and pull-ofs. adam jones from tool is the man at drop tuning.

Why not, you just have to use two fingers instead of one

i don't see how it would be possible to hammer on a full power chord in standard tuning. in fact i know it's not possible. you can slide to make a similar sound, but it's not going to be a hammer on. listen to tool and you'll get what i'm saying.

Yeah, There's a lick in Triad where he has a hammer-on/pull-off series on frets 0-2-3. Play that for a while and you're forearm will get bigger.....

Of course its not going to be a hammer on if you are sliding, its two different techniques. I'm just saying It's possible to get the same sound from both if you know how. Of course it's easier to do it in a drop tuning, but I'm just saying its not "impossible"
