How long can this sterilized vermiculite sit w/ out use?

An amigo of mine went out and bought some of those 64oz Glad microwavable plastic containers. He filled one up with about 8 cups of vermiculite then added about 400ml of water. He then cooked it in the microwave for 10 minutes on high to hopefully kill most of the bacteria. As soon as it came out of the microwave he fastened the lid down on all sides so it was air tight. His question is how long can this moist vermiculite sit with out being used? He was kinda dumb in making it too early and will probably not need it for another 8 or 9 days. Will it be wasted by then? Thanks for the info, my amigo is definately a newb to this and is taking it as he goes. =)

Forever. If there's no bacteria within the vermiculite, evolution would have to create new contams in the jar which would probably take oh...a good million years or so. As long as it is air tight, you should be fine.

HAhaha, but wouldn't the glass degrade in a million years?
And! Say you didn't kill ALL the bacteria in the jar, only the weakest! Then the hardest to kill would repopulat the jar, and become super-bacterial kings of the earth!
but I digress...

My friend keeps some spare 50/50 casing mix in a jar in the freezer so when he needs to do some patch work, he just pops it in the microwave for a minute or two to defrost. But that is 50/50 plus with added lime and crushed oyster...

I don't even bother to sterilize the vermiculite, ever, and I've used it from bags sitting open for months, so, honestly, I think you'll be fine.

Seriously, I have found bags I forgot about, didn't even remember how old they were. Used em' anyhow and had no isseus, verm seems to be pretty stable.
