I found a baby squirrel... Any advice?
    #22300344 - 09/27/15 08:15 PM (8 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys, so I found a baby squirrel. I have no idea what to feed it or what to do, or how old it is... So can anyone give me some tips?

I warmed it up and put it right next to the closest tree(where it could have fallen out of) and left it for an hour or so, that way the momma squirrel could come and get it. When I came back it was still asleep, and not taken away, so I have it with me now. I only have one, but I'll get some more pics from earlier from my girlfriend.

Do you have any nature centers or a park system where you live? They often rehabilitate wildlife.

Call your local wildlife rehabilitation center.  If they can't take the animal, at least they can tell you what to do.

Yeah op keep it if you want to, I've heard they make a decent pet. Otherwise I would wait till it grows up a bit and release it again.

I was planning to call the wildlife rehab tomorrow and see if they can take it or give me some info. Here's another pic from earlier.

I think human intervention is likely to not end the way we would hope.  Squirrels are not domestic or really social in any way that we would relate to as humans.  The squirrel is probably going to get stressed and die at this point, and that is just a fact of nature that human compassion cannot contend with.

It is necessary that the squirrel be around other squirrels in early life for it to be able to live as a squirrel.  It might seem cruel sending the baby out on it's own but giving it a chance to find a squirrel family is probably the best thing, even if the odds are survival are low it is less cruel than the alternative of taking it out of it's natural environment.

Maybe if you can find someone who is trained in animal rehab they will be able to make better decisions, but I'd strongly advise against keeping wild animals as pets out of misplaced compassion or affection.

I understand it not being domesticated and not really a "pet" but I'd rather let my compassion take hold. Compassion exists in nature plenty, although more uncommon.

Currently its just asleep in my hand. I'm gonna do some reading.

Hydration and warmth are key things to worry about before feeding.

Seriously that squirrel is going to die tonite unless you get some kitten or puppy formula. Cow or goat milk might kill it. Dip a tip of a rag in the warm formula and repeatedly and gently touch it to the squirrel's mouth. Hopefully it will respond.

Most people immediately give the new baby milk of some kind. DON'T DO IT. A baby will not starve to death over a 24-hour period, but it can surely die of dehydration. Rehydrate first. I repeat: Do not start the baby immediately on formula, rehydrate first.

Rehydration and digestion are mutually exclusive processes; they cannot be achieved at the same time. When food and water are introduced to the stomach, the water in the stomach is not used for digestion: the stomach makes a demand on the cells of the body to give up fluids to digest the food; the cells will give up fluid no matter how little the body has at the time of demand, leaving the body further depleted. The water in the stomach is not absorbed until it reaches the small intestines, after the digestive demand has been made; what is absorbed then, is not enough to repair and refill, so a downward spiral ensues with each feeding: food causes digestive demand followed by more fluid depletion followed by more severe dehydration, ending in death in a few days if not immediately.
