Worried about casings
    #2229465 - 01/08/04 07:47 PM (20 years, 2 months ago)

I have two casings going right now. Im a little worried because I see all these pics of the casing layer completly covered in white before people are fruiting them. I placed my casing into the terrarium as soon as I saw white forming in the valleys of the casing layer. Only about 5% of the surface was probably colonized. I'm so confused. I see all these pics of really colonized surfaces and then other people are telling me it should not even break the surface at all, but rather be just below the surface. Theyve been in there for two days, should I revert back to incubation? Is the mycelleium going to bust through the surface still, even with room temps?

Also, I think my cool mist humidifier is drying out my casings, anyone else had this problem?

no, you can continue to fruit it. The mycelium is still growing even though you have it in the fruiting chamber, you'll be fine.

why do you think its drying out the casings?

Yeah, the mycelium will continue to colonize the casing layer even through fruiting conditions.

Ive had problems with a cool mist drying out casings. You might want to set it up on a timer so its not on as much. Add some perilte in your terrarium, and just do fan and mist...that usually works the best anyways.

You should be fruiting it at that time -- as long as it's evenly distributed about the surface of the casing.
