ever since i've taken philosophy, i've completely forgot what my soul is. When i accepted the philosophy that the soul is just a perception. The soul really cannot be a perception, so i find it useless.

The easiest way to find one's soul, in my opinion, is to not look for anything at all for a while

Alexander Pope. 1688?1744 442. The Dying Christian to his Soul VITAL spark of heav'nly flame! Quit, O quit this mortal frame: Trembling, hoping, ling'ring, flying, O the pain, the bliss of dying! Cease, fond Nature, cease thy strife, 5 And let me languish into life. Hark! they whisper; angels say, Sister Spirit, come away! What is this absorbs me quite? Steals my senses, shuts my sight, 10 Drowns my spirits, draws my breath? Tell me, my soul, can this be death? The world recedes; it disappears! Heav'n opens on my eyes! my ears With sounds seraphic ring! 15 Lend, lend your wings! I mount! I fly! O Grave! where is thy victory? O Death! where is thy sting?

What this person says:
Even if there is no reason to believe in a supernatural soul, the idea of a soul will persist. It is a useful way to identify that part of a person that thinks and has feelings. We need a term to refer to those real, higher capacities of humans that are traditionally included within the supernatural soul.
I propose we call this bundle of higher capabilities the natural soul. It can not be separated from the body. It depends upon the functioning of one's brain, nervous system, and body. It includes the mind, will, and conscience. Besides including one's abilities to think and make moral decisions, it includes our feelings and emotions. Natural souls are not immortal, since that would be contrary to the idea that the natural soul results from the normal functioning of one's nervous system and body. The natural soul refers to all human psychological processes, which are regarded as both real and entirely natural.

And this was interesting:
Quote:
Each man and woman born into this world is a being made of three (3) distinct components:
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23 KJV)
1: The BODY. This is your PHYSICAL component of being. It is flesh made from a collection of unremarkable mineral elements (but is mostly water) and is in harmony with the nature and spirit of this world. It grows, matures, begins to deteriorate, eventually dies, and then decomposes back into its constituent elements and remains a part of the dust of the world. The body is a part of you but is NOT ALL of what defines who YOU are.
"And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed," (Proverbs 5:11 KJV)
2: The SOUL. This is who YOU are; it is a part of your SPIRITUAL component. This is your individuality, your "I AM" so to speak, your "heart." Although your individual soul did not exist before your mother and father procreated you, it will exist forever. It cannot be killed by man:
"And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." (Matt. 10:28 KJV)
When your body dies your soul (YOU) will leave the body of flesh:
"And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin." (Genesis 35:18 KJV)
3: The SPIRIT. This is the source of power and control for both your body and soul; it is either evil or good, darkness or light, unholy or Holy, unclean or clean, of Satan or of God:
"But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of." (Luke 9:55 KJV)

Crikey, you read Pope?
Markos the Gnostic and I discussed this ages ago. I think he agrees with the KJV interpretation. I draw a line of distinction between the soul and the spirit in a different place. I liken the soul to the "breath" as in the Greek 'pnein' which means 'to breathe'. I understand the spirit to be the immaterial part.

So I guess your saying that the souls is us the ego the physical being the one that walks the earth and the spirit is what remains after our ego/physical body dies.
But in the christian sense i don beleive in the soul only the mind.

If the 'soul' is breath there isn't anything spectacular about having one. There is evidence that there is an immaterial component to humans. It is this component that supposedly is the cause of our ability to use conceptual abstraction.

Before I went and found the stuff I quoted from different websites, I was thinking that the soul is the essence of who we are. And I would have thought the spirit and soul were the same.
So, then, the spirit would be the material part of our non-physical bodies? And the soul would be a non-material component of the spirit and physical body?

I would say that is a possibility, yes.
Unfortunately I don't offer many references to some of the pearls I have discovered over the last 30 years of studying philosophy. I have shared quite a few links at the top of this forum though. The information can be found in them with a little bit of searching. It also might be fruitful to use Google and type in words like 'immaterial' and 'soul'.

I only searched on MSN, and of course didn't find a lot. Spent about an hour or so, also. I will probably do a deeper search, but I'll start with your philosophy links. I may wait until the weekend, however.
But the question remains:
Quote:
centrum: ever since i've taken philosophy, i've completely forgot what my soul is. When i accepted the philosophy that the soul is just a perception. The soul really cannot be a perception, so i find it useless.
Centrum, are you saying that philosophy taught you that the soul is a perception, so you don't need the soul? Or are you saying that you can't buy the fact that your soul is a perception, so you disregard what philosophy teaches about it?
I don't know if a soul is useless or useful. I think it is something that just is, isn't it?

I am of the belief that we don't really have individual souls, but instead we all have the same soul, unifying us. The Transcendentalists called this the oversoul. It is an ultimate reality, an indefinable spiritual essence.

I think that we are all made of the same thing God is made of, which I think would be our spirits. Even though we are all individuals, we are all the same, from the same source, and connected to each other.

I was also disillusioned... I thought this was about finding one's Soul Seek connection, as it tends to disappear for days... actually, it has been pretty stable for the past month.
I really don't believe anything on this. I mean, I see it as possible that there is a little point of energy that keeps us powered up and aware, alive, and that this is the gift of life that makes this all possible, and that all of these points are of course from the same... but I also see it as possible that our consciousness is the result of the connections within us.
EIther way, that consciousness is still connected to everything else in existance on basically infinite levels.... energy is quite the thing. Peace.
